WASHINGTON - Many people like to stop and play with newborn babies, but now some adult women are playing house with fake babies.

Some women are even going as far as taking day trips with the fake babies to the park, out to eat, and even hosting birthday parties for them.

I wonder if, for some of these women, that’s exactly the point. As darling as babies are, as much reward as there is in parenthood, there is a great deal of work and unpleasantness mixed in. These women have taken out the work of motherhood by taking out the child. Dolls don’t get you up in the night or need diaper changes or become inexplicably inconsolable.

It’s pretend motherhood, and nothing’s real. There’s no baby, no sacrifice, no reward.

Whats keeping them from adopting a real child, if they desire a child that bad? And it is not just childless couples, there are women with children buying these as well.

Adoption can be difficult. Adopt in the US and you risk having a child who is brain-damaged by its mother's substance abuse, or has inherited the low IQ that made its parents dysfunctional in the first place; this has happened to three different adoptive families I know.
