Details emerge on Jett Travolta's death

John Travolta, Kelly Preston and their children Jett and Ella Bleu, leave an airport in Rome.

John Travolta's lawyers -- who are close family friends -- reveal that Jett may have died in his father's arms Friday.

Us: How is John doing?

-snip- "John and Kelly are suffering total misery. They were so close to their son. This is hard to accept.

-snip-

Us: Have John and Kelly spent time with anyone since everyone arrived?

Ossi and McDermott: "John and Kelly have been pretty much locked away.

"We are staying here until John leaves. The autopsy should be on Monday.

-snip-

Us: It's been reported that Jett was left alone for several hours before being discovered. Can you clarify the timeline?

Ossi and McDermott: "Jett was not left alone. He had a nanny present at all times. The nanny was sleeping close to Jett's room. There was a baby monitor, a chime on the door so it was known when Jett was going in and out. He was completely supervised. The nanny found him.

Us: Is it true that Jett died in John's arms?

Ossi and McDermott: "Jett may have still been alive when John administered CPR, and then the EMT took over. Jett was pronounced dead at the hospital. I like to believe John had a chance to say goodbye. He may have died in his dad's arms. I am not certain."

Us: It's been said Jett had a history of seizures. How often did he have them?

Ossi and McDermott: "I am not confident to talk about that. I know he had a history, which of course warranted the extra attention."

I have been watching this thread but stopped posting to it I think Tues or Wed. While I have never met John Travolta, I know he filmed the movie “Phenomenon” (sp;)) in Auburn, CA. The people of the town of Auburn, where my parents lived, had very nice things to say about John Travolta.

I remember how well Sean Hannity and Kelly Preston got along when she brought things to Houston for Katrina.

This is all very sad and we should hug our kids extra tight. My heart goes out to the parents who have posted here who KNOW about seizure disorders.

23. Members of Scientology are induced to confess to acts that, if not outright criminal, are embarrassing or possibly destructive to the person's job, marriage or profession. For example, shoplifting, adultery, masturbation, homosexuality, drug abuse, or any other potentially embarrassing or illegal matters are recorded. Members are urged to write down these compromising facts in their own handwriting, under the guise that it is a "religious confessional" for the member's good. The truth is that these "confessions" are kept to blackmail and extort members should they dare to speak out against Scientology. Members are also coerced to sign documents that are self-damaging in order to protect Scientology in case they dare to leave its control and speak the damaging truth. I know all this to be true, because I watched this done to others; I did it to others; and it was done to me.

Actually he took a SUV to the airport as soon as filming was completed and, according to several programs last night, he flew his private jet to the funeral, they had a picture of him landing on the private airport in the afternoon and parked outside Travolta home with several other private planes.

24. I have personally witnessed executive decisions directed to members instructing them to “end cycle”, i.e., die. I have personally read written instructions by Ray Mithoff concerning the following individuals:

a) Diane Morrison, a personal friend of mine. She had cancer. Radiation treatment is forbidden by Scientology. She was instructed by Ray Mithoff to “end cycle.” Her husband, Shawn Morrison, was ordered by Ray Mithoff to transport her off of the Scientology property at Gilman Hot Springs, California, to her mother’s house so that she would not die on Scientology property.

b) Ted Cormier, a personal friend of mine. He had Parkinson’s disease. He was ordered to leave Gilman Hot Springs and go directly to Flag for NOTS 34, auditing to cure his cancer. When this failed, Ray Mithoff sent him orders in his Pre-Clear folder for him to “end cycle.” He died.

25. I have personally reviewed a video of a television interview of Roxanne Friend, a former Scientologist. She had cancer which could have been successfully treated. She was kidnapped in California and taken across country in a motor home to FLAG in Clearwater where she was held against her will, which prevented her from getting cancer treatment. After she escaped she gave this interview that I observed on a television talk show. She disclosed that she was beyond treatment because of this delay and subsequently died. Based on my experience in Scientology, her statements ring true.

Can’t stop personally attacking me.
You know that is the MO of Scientology. ATTACK not defend.

Except with Jett’s death they are having to change their strategy.

Why did you promote Narconon on this thread? Do you think a disabled boy should be put through their detox program?

A glimpse of the behind-the-scenes Travolta last night on one of the entertainment programs, when he was filming a fire movie, in between takes he was fooling around and showing dance moves to fans. He is just one of those naturally happy individuals, and now his heart is broken. I saw that this weekend BIO is doing a biography of he and Kelly.

“Vitamin “bombs” risk poisoning their users. The State of Oklahoma’s examiners reported in 1991 that “The use of high amounts of vitamins and minerals in the amounts described administered by Narconon can be potentially dangerous to the patients of Narconon according to the more credible medical evidence ...” Many of the dosages set by Hubbard far exceed the recommended maximum intakes set by the United States Institute of Medicine’s Food and Nutrition Board (FNB). Typically, Hubbard’s dosages have not been amended for decades, despite the advance of medical and scientific knowledge; the Scientologists are required (by Hubbard’s own instructions) not to alter his doctrines, even where they conflict with proven science. The Food and Nutrition Board is responsible for setting recommended dietary allowances (RDAs) and upper limits (ULs), the maximum level of daily nutrient intake that is likely to pose no risk of adverse effects. In almost every single case, Hubbard recommends dosages well above the safe limits, in some cases as much as 142 times more than the toxic level. The side effects of such huge overdoses range from liver damage, hair loss, brain swelling and nausea up to fatal heart and respiratory failure. The following table shows the levels recommended by Hubbard and the FNB, and the proven consequences of dosages beyond the FNB’s upper limits. “

"While on the Apollo, I observed numerous punishments meted out for many minor infractions or mistakes made in connection with Hubbard's very strict and bizarre policies. On a number of occasions, I saw people placed in the "chain lockers" of the boat on direct orders of Hubbard. These lockers were small, smelly holes, covered by grates, where the chain for the anchor was stored. I saw one boy held in there for thirty nights, crying and begging to be released. He was only allowed out to clean the bilges where the sewer and refuse of the ship collected. I believe his "crimes" were taking or using a musical instrument, I believe a flute, of someone else [sic] without permission.

This is how Tonja summed up her days in the CMO: "I was in Scientology from the age of thirteen to the age of eighteen. I received at some times $2.50 per week pay, and at other times approximately $17.20 a week. I received no education." Tonja Burden remained in the Commodores Messenger Org until November 1977, when, aged eighteen, she made her escape from Scientology. In 1986, the Scientologists paid her an out of court settlement to abandon a suit she had brought for kidnapping http://www.skeptictank.org/childcos.htm

Travolta Tragedy: Don't Blame L. Ron Hubbard

Friday January 9, 2009

I don't normally write about celebrity scandal--it's not my thing. But I came across this thoughtful article, "Travolta Tragedy: Don't Blame L. Ron Hubbard," by Kathryn Lofton on a new webzine, "Religion Dispatches," that I like a lot (the articles are written mainly by religion scholars and it's heavy on the politics.)

In her essay, Lofton makes a plea that, in the process of endless, public, tabloid dissection of Kelly Preston's and John Travolta's tragic loss of their son, that people stand back for a moment, resist the temptation to sensationalize and instead think about what, exactly, we are all avoiding when we gleefully gossip about a famous person's loss, especially that of someone belonging to the Church of Scientology, the religion everyone loves to despise:

"It's tempting to rehearse the details of this consumption, to work through the crime scene and the motive, to share what we know about Jett's medical records, his ambulance ride, and his parents' abiding love for their church. It is tempting to do so because it is what we do, studying minor melodramas to fill conversation at check-out lines, to fill the spaces of our own losses as we stare, superior, at the failures of others....we will know and prosecute, know and defame, know and titter.

We will know the Travolta-Preston world soon better than we know Gaza, better than we know western Xinjiang, and better than we know Detroit...Before it begins (the inquests, the circling paparazzi, weeping Kelly explicating before weeping Oprah) let us pause, briefly, to think about that body, to think about his floor, and to think about that thing that is much harder to make spectacular, to make sensational or cultish. The tedious work of parenting is beyond unsexy. It is boring and disappointing, repetitive at best and adventurous at worst. And to make a world feel better for what a lousy job they do at it (or how lousy they think they're doing at it), they will spend some time parsing the possibly religious structures of two actors' struggles with it. The structures of religion allow for that, and will survive beyond that, furnishing a bendable whipping post for human frailty."

It's a thought-provoking article and happily beyond the usual drivel about these matters. Check it out

Travolta Tragedy: Don't Blame L. Ron Hubbard

By Kathryn Lofton

January 6, 2009

John Travolta’s 16-year-old son is found dead and our celebrity culture is quick to blame the religion of his parents, Scientology. So much harder to face the fact of death, to look beyond the spectacle of someone else’s tragedy and toward our own frailty and error. Marlene Dumas, "The Painter"; the Travolta family

Many contemporary painters and photographers take childhood as their subject, though few do so with the ghoulish stare of Marlene Dumas, whose first major American exhibition, “Measuring Your Own Grave,” is currently on display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

Death drapes Dumas’ signature portraits: the head of a dead Marilyn Monroe, dead apartheid-era Afrikaners, dead Jesus, and dead faceless bodies—even the live subjects seem fatally wounded. Her canvases don’t show violent acts as much as they show how we are after being violated; the way the face bears decimation long after the terror is past. “The Painter” (1994) observes a standing toddler, nude, hands dipped in blue and red paint. Or is it blue paint and red blood? It doesn’t matter, really, since the painter’s face bears a clocked stillness that suggests she’s already seen too much. Innocence is impossible in Marlene Dumas’ world.

Will Dumas someday soon turn to Jett Travolta? If she does, how will she frame him? Would he be grabbing Kelly Preston’s face, suggesting untoward mother-son intimacy? Most likely Dumas will /images/managed/Story+Image_jett.jpgskip the sentiment and stare instead at 16-year-old Jett lying on the bathroom floor of his family’s Old Bahama Bay condo, where he was found Friday morning by his nanny, Jeff Kathrein. This is where her gaze would linger, forcing the viewer to think about youth, about flesh, about need, and about rigor mortis.

Before we get Dumas’ rendition, we’ll have to settle for the glaring inelegance of tabloid portraiture. If you don’t yet know the religious turn this will take—it has taken—just wait for it. Watch and stare, gape-mouthed, as Jett’s death is blamed not on malady, but on the tentacular reach of Mr. Mysterioso, L. Ron Hubbard. Watch the parade of medical experts, legal consultants, and members of the Autism Police parade their aghast faces across whatever media outlet will tolerate their hack. Watch the competitive forms of parental hysteria, as cleaning products, mood stabilizers, and engrams are tossed about as inciting accomplices to the crime. Watch too how Scientology is confused with Christian Science, and how legal rights are compromised, constantly, to make everyone else feel better about just how scary it is to watch a child grow, and to worry that (s)he won’t.

Consuming celebrity culture is always about inadequacies, and consuming this sad scene is no different. It’s tempting to rehearse the details of this consumption, to work through the crime scene and the motive, to share what we know about Jett’s medical records, his ambulance ride, and his parents’ abiding love for their church. It is tempting to do so because it is what we do, studying minor melodramas to fill conversation at check-out lines, to fill the spaces of our own losses as we stare, superior, at the failures of others. But to rehearse the details is to endorse the rehearsal of details, to plug by proxy that it is reasonable to want to know a father’s last words, a family’s religious decisions, or a teenager’s chemical balance. As if it is reasonable to know that which should make us, somewhere inside, wince to know.

Nonetheless, we will know and prosecute, know and defame, know and titter. We will know the Travolta-Preston world soon better than we know Gaza, better than we know western Xinjiang, and better than we know Detroit. For some of us, more than we want to admit, we will seek to understand Jett and his suffering better than we do our own child’s. We will think—from our helicopter parenting and minivan mindfulness—that we are doing better by our children because we pay attention without L. Ron or because we drop by the doctor at every sniffle. We will think this. You will think this.

Before it begins (the inquests, the circling paparazzi, weeping Kelly explicating before weeping Oprah) let us pause, briefly, to think about that body, to think about his floor, and to think about that thing that is much harder to make spectacular, to make sensational or cultish. The tedious work of parenting is beyond unsexy. It is boring and disappointing, repetitive at best and adventurous at worst. And to make a world feel better for what a lousy job they do at it (or how lousy they think they’re doing at it), they will spend some time parsing the possibly religious structures of two actors’ struggles with it. The structures of religion allow for that, and will survive beyond that, furnishing a bendable whipping post for human frailty.

Scientology cannot be killed by the lambasting of its adherents, no matter how many of its antagonists would like their defamation to genuinely deconstruct. So as we enter a new year, a new presidency, and a new set of childbirths, we may want to turn a bit from the crumbling content of others. Better effort might be put toward a pilgrimage to paintings that remind us, with excruciating acuity, that whatever we make at our kitchen tables, in our bedrooms, and at our play groups, it is nothing over which we possess any real control.

Kathryn Lofton is a Fellow at the Center for the Study of Religion at Princeton University. She has taught at Indiana University, Bloomington (2006-2008), Reed College in Portland, Oregon (2005-2006) and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she received her Ph.D. in 2005. She is currently at work on her first book, Oprah: The Gospel of an Icon.

This is all going on while Travlota is a high level member of Scientology. He isn’t willing to protect the children.

So who is?

Certainly most on this thread don’t seem to have a problem with the child abuse.

But hey, what ever floats your boat.
