2012 ping
I think between now and then there’ll be a hugely publicized discovery that the original interpretations of the mayan calendar were incorrect and that it actually says something like 2027.
As with all things stupid, it’s always preferable to string along your inept followers as long as possible.

In around summer 2012 we’ll see all kinds of “end of the world” stuff for sale. Then come Dec 22 all the sellers will disappear so they don’t have to give refunds.
Well whatever happens it is odd that many different cultures sought to record significance to the date in question.
Personally I think that the 2012 date somehow centers around me and my life and not with some ancient culture. I just know that I am on a collision course with the Universe.

In 1987 I was a reporter for a newspaper in Alaska. The story at the time was about the “harmonic convergence,” in which the planets were lined up in perfect synchronicity to usher in a new age of peace, enlightenment, and understanding. I went to a gathering of true believers on the day of the convergence at one of those spectacularly beautiful Alaskan locations with the ocean at my feet and the mountains to my back, and they were filled with the hope that finally a new day had dawned and that the era of human peacefulness had arrived. They were convinced; the stars were aligned; they were in agreement; a new world awaited them tomorrow.
When I got back to my car, I discovered someone had broken in and stolen my stereo.
Jimmah Carter is looking forward to the next 4 years so he will be replaced as the worst president in modern history and maybe in all of US history.
I predict all my 2012 predictions will be wrong. Unless that prediction is wrong too, in which case I guess they’ll all be right. Or something.

It is obvious that many liberals allave their tin-foil hats on i waiting for 2012. They all clai that the world is ending anyway as prophesized by their prophet Al Gore.

How about a genetically engineered smallpox terror attack followed by a massive US nuclear retaliation against the middle east, dumping so much ash into the atmosphere that the world freezes over in an un-ending nuclear winter.

A “parody religion”, the Church of the SubGenius, used to put out flyers saying “The world MAY end soon, and you MAY die!”
(Notice “may”.) They proclaimed a “Rupture” that would take place on July 5, 1998. It didn’t happen—so they admitted that the info was wrong; the year was upside down. So I guess we’re all set until 8661!
