Best online bulk ammo sales?

Posted on 11/15/2008 7:14:07 PM PST by roostercogburn

Looking for the best place to buy bulk ammo from. Obviously want best price, but would like experienced buyers to recommend which to possibly stay away from due to poor quality. Years back bought bulk at a gunshow and had all kinds of problems. These were .357 SIG and 9mm rounds.

Wal mart sells exactly the same ammunition. It is the same stuff in the same boxes that is sold anywhre.

No manufacturer would sell “factory seconds” or ammunition that did not go through quality control. The legal liability would be insane.

One other worst case issue - have a holster or sling so you can get that gun out of your hands when the LEC responds to reports of shots fired. Homeowners have been shot or had the stuffing beat out of them for displaying their gun when the cops arrive.

what load for the 12 gauge do you recommend for home defense

I’m no expert, but years ago read a research article by a fellow
(named Aagard?).

It sounds like your environment and level of risk you can tolerate
for “collateral damage” to innocent bystanders or neighbors are important factors.

IIRC, he found that regular game loads with #6 shot would make things
very unpleasant for an invader, but anything that didn’t hit the perp
would probably only make it through a sheet or two of sheetrock
with very little energy.
So that may be what you’d want if you live in a fairly urban residential
environment.

But, as some have noted here, that #6 shot loses it’s effect if
you’re dealing with someone wearing heavy/layered clothing, especially
something like a heavy leather wintertime coat...
thus you’d probably want to vary your loads, as in
first: #6 shot
second: 00 Buck
third: Slugs (so as to finish the arguement and make sure the perp
doesn’t get to retreat and return to finish you off).
Of course, it’s better have a high capacity shotgun and select a
spectrum of rounds fitting your situation.

And bear in mind that once you get past that #6 shot...lethal
projectiles will penetrate sheetrock and can harm/kill some innocent
in the next room or outside the house.

And as always: consult your local/county/state laws before doing anything.

Imagine a shot shell full of stacked dimes, you have to have a barrel with no choke though. old timers tell me they would have a double barrel with dime loads in the cylinder sized barrel and a mixed load of 00 and #4 in the other, or rock salt and rice.

http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/bot35.htm Read the results of this myth, I had to know myself if it was worth shooting 16 dimes at an attacker.

The primary defense feature of a shotgun is the sound it makes when you chamber a shell.

My semi-auto makes a sweet sound like someone chopping old gear shift levers.

And yes, if youre not buying a case at a time, the 100 round white boxes of handgun ammo from wal mart are the way to go.

I have been buying a 100 round box of 38 special and one of 45 acp from them each month for my stash

Everyone who can afford it should have 1K rounds of defensive handgun ammo, 2-3 bricks of 22LR and at least 1K rounds of 5.56 ot 7.62x39 rifle ammo by the time the messiah is sworn in.

AND FOR GODS SAKE DONT TELL ANYONE YOU HAVE IT.

never buy anything online

Yep.

Buy local, pay cash--no check, no plastic.

Any purchase that can be traced to you indicates the presence of at least one firearm of that caliber. If you want to stay off the radar and have arms purchased private sale (no paperwork), pay cash for the ammo.

Amen to that!

What we may well be facing in the near future is paid informants everywhere that will be finding any possible way to get reward money to turn in people with guns, especially with so many unemployed. It could be some kids with cellphone cameras taking pics in the parking lot as you come out of a sporting goods store. It can be anything like having a subscription to a gun magazine.
Possibly even at a shooting range.

Thanks for the dimes-as-shot myth expose’.

You should call The Discovery Channel and ask to speak to
“Mythbusters”.

I know this will expose me as only a general enthusiast of the shooting
sports.
As about all I’ve heard of non-standard ammo loads for shotguns
is the old “rock salt” load to discourage kids trying to steal watermelons!!!

Maybe that’s just a “rural legend” from my youth in Oklahoma!

I bet I could get a better penetration factor of still using 16 dimes but gluing 4 dimes together and having 4 groups.
Actually this would fall into a pretty good at home defense round because of the lack of penetration to go through walls.

Interesting test. Appreciate the link; now there’s a defnitive answer to those giving the stupid “load up with dime!” advice.

This is my definition of CHANGE. Insufficient penetration due to the lack of weight per penny, would break the skin and cause severe bruising. I would not totally throw this away, sometime in the near future I will try the same thing but using a drop of super glue to stack 4 sets of 4 dimes. If I had a 10 gauge I would try pennies.

While certainly an amusing & educational exercise, it points to two facts:
1. This urban-legend load is inadequately effective/reliable while retaining all the problems of being in a lethal category
2. It’s an awful lot of work for an unviable replacement to a cheap off-the-shelf solution.

Its possible some day in the bleak future when ammunition is scarce almost anything can be used, one of the things I do not have in my reloading tools is lead bullet casting equipment.

Compared to 10 years ago ammo now is outrageously expensive.
