'Star Trek'09: An Exclusive First Look at the Enterprise
EW.COM ^ | 11/11/2008 | Jeff Jensen

JJ Abrams wasn't a huge fan of the original Star Trek TV series as a kid, but he does have one unabashed gee-whiz Star Trek memory: watching the first feature film (1979's Star Trek: The Motion Picture) and marveling over the big reveal of the Enterprise during a long sequence in which James T. Kirk takes a slow-boat tour around the iconic starship. "The coolest thing about it—maybe the coolest thing in the movie—was when you flew around the ship, you could see all the different panels that made up the ship," says the director of the forthcoming Trek reboot, slated for a May 8, 2009 release. "It was the first time I had ever seen that level of attention, that love of detail, given to the tangible, practical reality of the ship."

Speaking of Star Trek canon......I was in a Barnes and Noble today and there was shelf after shelf of Star Trek fiction!

You rang?

Her I am.

Overall, the new Enterprise looks great. One thing that struck me was how thin it is on the lowers secondary hull. Could that area be in shadow or is it really that thin. Also, since this is supposed to be a pre-quel, why are the warp engines similar to the one in “Star Trek:The motion Picture”? They should have looked more like the ons in the Original Series. The Saucer shaped primary hull looks fairly close to the Original NCC-1701.

All that aside, I can’t wait to see what they’ve done to my namesake. Should be an interesting flick.

Say what you will of the first movie itself, but the model is considered by many to be the single best film miniature ever.

The first movie also introduced the awesome Klingon theme: Star Trek: The Motion Picture - Klingon attack

I’m surprised that nobody has yet built a life sized model of the Enterprise as a hotel. The original Enterprise was spartan, so they would probably base the design on TNG Enterprise.

Many of the processes could be duplicated, such as issued locater-communicators that are small walkie-talkies, with RFID chips in them to quickly locate an individual. There could also be some voice recognition so that you could ask or talk to computers.

The “Ten Forward” restaurant could be very creative with both food and drink. Etc.

There is only one Capt. James T.Kirk just like there is only one Batman. All others are poor imitations.

The first movie was fun to see, mostly due to the audience members who dressed up, but it stunk almost as bad as the last two series (of the five). I think the upcoming movie recasts the original series characters using new actors. Lucky them, eh?

I get the impression this isn’t a prequel but rather a full reboot.

And that’s another thing about Berman. As soon as Roddenberry died, the music on TNG turned.... how to say it? The last three seasons, and actually a fair bit of the fourth, the music sounded exactly the same, especially when going to a commercial break. It was bland, lifeless, and you certainly didn’t hear any classic references. It was as if Berman didn’t want to acknowledge TOS in the least. DS9 was the same way, and I gave up on it rather quickly for that reason.

Coolest Ship Reveal EVER. Joss Whedon’s Serenity. Less majestic than the Star Trek:MP reveal, but more poignant for a Browncoat-fanboy like me.
