What happened yesterday - 11/08/2008? [Update at post number 207]

Posted on 11/09/2008 5:46:59 AM PST by reg45

Question: What happened to FreeRepublic yesterday? It was unavailable? I was beginning to suffer from truth withdrawal syndrome.

Man50D-I want to thank you for the entertainment, this has been a blast. Probably when this thread gets to 400/500 post we will finally figure out the two points you keep repeating. Some of us are pretty slow, I know I am.

BTW, if you copy this post along with your resume you would very likely get a position at one of the new Obama reeducation camps, maybe even warden. Then you could see to it that we are force feed your wisdom until we get it right. Good luck

**ITS THE FR COLLEGE FOOTBALL LIVE THREAD: Week 11 The Crying Game** Sunday, November 09, 2008 7:16:23 AM · 59 of 69 Man50D to GOP_Raider; All Forgive me for being out of the loop, but I was having trouble with FR all day. (My connection(s) kept timing out). Did we have any server problems here today or was it just with my computer?

I don’t know what happened. I couldn’t access the site all day right up to when I went to bed around 11:30pm. There is a way to check if a site is down. Go to the run window in your pc and type in “cmd”. From that window type in “ping” then type either the website name(ex:www.freerepublic.com) or the ip address then hit enter. A site that is connected to the web will reply with the ip address. A site that is down will return the “request timed out” message as did FR all day yesterday.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Why didn’t you PM one of the mods to find out what happened? Just askin’.

LOL! Game, set and match!

I did a search for “Jim Robinson” as a user of the forum.

This is Jim Robinson’s post from early this morning:

Don’t know what it was all about, but apparently John got it fixed. Whew! Hate it when FR goes down.

"Maybe you can give us an answer? I saw on the yahoo groups site that there was a hard crash and John had to go deal with it. Is all okay now? It seems to be running better.

Also, there’s a rumor here that you’ve been ill again. Are you okay?"

Yup, the entire system was down hard yesterday. We couldn't even reach it remotely. It's like we had no system at all, no DNS, nothing. John had to drive up to the data center to restart and debug it. After rebooting, he had to do some major diagnostic and forensic work, some debugging and network systems work, and finally got it up again.

Don't know exactly what the error was that brought it down, probably a combination of things. We had a particularly nasty DOS attack last week and the system has not been fully up to speed since. Don't want to start any conspiracy theories, but someone could be messing with us. Got a nagging feeling that not all the people of the world love us.

John will continue researching, refining and beefing up our systems and security. And we'll also be ordering some new equipment that will help us recover remotely. We now have twelve separate servers up there and keeping them all running, all on the network and all synchronized is a bit of a chore. The next major hardware upgrade we make will include a replacement of all these separate boxes into one unit where the various processors are on boards that just plug into a big box. And when the big box is filled up, we can simply add another big box and continue plugging in more processor boards as needed. That should handle our growth to a few million concurrent users. After that, we'll have some serious hardware growth issues to contend with.

We'll also be exploring an offshore account somewhere, perhaps a mirror site for maximum redundancy, and maybe some underground networking. We'll be encouraging a comeback of the local chapter networking system and encouraging our members to exchange email addresses and phone numbers with trusted chapter or group members.

On the personal side, I am fairly well. Still have the infection in my lower right leg and they're treating it, but we can't seem to get rid of it. But we're managing. Just praying it doesn't get worse and they won't have to amputate it too. My blood sugar is under control. Diet and the pills are keeping it in the "good" range. Don't have to use insulin. They're also giving me pills for circulation, blood pressure, cholesterol, various dietary supplements and minerals and vitamins. They've discontinued the antibiotics. I take enough pills daily to choke a horse.

I have regained much of my strength and I'm now able to sleep at night. I can attend to most of my personal needs but still need quite a bit of Chris' help with some things, like dressing, for example. I can now transfer myself to and from bed and in and out of the driver's seat of the van and I can drive. This gives us some independence.

Sheila, John and Chris are all well.

Thank you all very much for hanging in there with us. We must all hang together or surely we'll hang separately.

God bless.

I don’t know how he’s made it here on FR for so long! I can’t believe he hasn’t had a nervous breakdown yet! He’s probably one of those people who do exactly the speed limit, too ~ not one MPH under, not one MHP over.

Most sites have the ability to make a thread that stays on the top of the list or “sticks” there, thus the term sticky thread.

The point of a sticky thread is to put information for all members to read that won’t drop off the first page as new posts are added.

A thread from the moderator illuminating when vanity posts are appropriate would an example of posible sticky thread topic.

I still don’t feel like a spring chicken. Hubby looked at me this morning and said, “Funny! You don’t LOOK a day over 40!”

Don’t worry. He’ll recover.

Yes, much more than whether or not the site suffered a dos attack is whether or not JimRob is ill.

Prayers up that’s not the case!

Good to hear sir. WTG John. We so appreciate y’all.

JimRob, are you doing cinnamon and/or cranberry? A supplement called Cinnergen helps me quite a bit.
