Meteor Shower Could Spur Bright Fireballs ("Halloween fireballs" aka Taurid meteors Nov. 5-12)

The Taurid meteors, sometimes called the "Halloween fireballs," show up between mid-October and mid-November, but Nov. 5 to 12 will likely be the best time to look for them this year, taking into account both their peak of activity and the effect of increasingly bright moonlight on viewing conditions.

After the Moon sets – around 11 p.m. local time on Nov. 5, later on subsequent nights – some 10 to 15 meteors may appear per hour. They are often yellowish-orange and, as meteors go, appear to move rather slowly. Their name comes from the way they seem to radiate from the constellation Taurus, the Bull, which sits low in the east a couple of hours after sundown and is almost directly overhead by around 1:30 a.m.

Meteors – popularly referred to as "shooting stars" – are generated when debris enters and burns up in Earth's atmosphere. In the case of the Taurids, they are attributed to debris left behind by Encke's Comet, or perhaps by a much larger comet that upon disintegrating, left Encke and a lot of other rubble in its wake.

I saw one this past Saturday. It was far more brilliant and longer in duration than the mostly Leonid meteors I have seen.

Everyone should try to see one of these at least once. :)

More than a few feel Hussein is an antichrist or something very close to it. St. Malachy prophecised Pope Benedict XVI would be the last pope and/or one more who would see the world through many horrors and Rome/Catholic Church/world would be destroyed. The Mayan calendar ends 2012 and many others have proficised the world ending 12/12/2012. Hate to say it, but we may want to start living it up now before it's all over or we're ordered to spread the wealth around.

I think I’ve already seen a couple of these. I called them “horizontal falling stars”. Hoping it’s clear here when they show up.

“Encke Dencke Doo”

Hmmmm..........I guess you’re forgiven. I mean, it IS Friday and it IS Halloween.
(Encke Dencke Doo indeed) LOL!

Yep. I've got 80 cords of oak here that are begging to be burned. Maybe by the 5th when the meteors are visible we'll get some clearing.

(Encke Dencke Doo.....thanks for the earworm)

Holy cow, that's a lot of firewood! Even if you mean "face cords" (4'x8'x18") that's still like 17 full cords. I generally get by on a half-dozen (full) cords a winter, granted the house is very well insulated. If you don't mind my asking, what sort of building are you heating, and where located? I'm impressed...

Thanks NormsRevenge. I slept out in the country last night, and this morning was out before sunup, and saw a shooting star. Didn't know it was time for these. :')

Central Coast of California. Heating two story house, 2 fireplaces.

No, these are “real” cords and there are 80 of them. I usually go through 3 or 4 a year, sometimes more. We took a lot of oaks out due to the fire danger, and the stockpile of cordwood is the result.
