W. is a fair and balanced movie, says its creator, Oliver Stone.
I think in this present political state, the real George W. Bush might not approve of this movie, Stone told the Chicago Sun-Times. But this movie tries to understand George W. Bush: the good, the bad, and the ugly.
Stone definitely puts the emphasis on the ugly in the film, which opened in theaters Friday. He basically acts as cinematic shrink and psychoanalyzes the parent-child relationship between elder George H.W. Bush and junior George W.
Stone presents the son as a twisted foul-mouthed drunk with a daddy complex who becomes a religious zealot and accidentally ends up being leader of the free world.

ACTUALLY PRESIDENT Bush won in 2005 by over 3 million votes.
Let's have that debate, Mike.
PRESIDENT Bush actally "lost":
NH by 9,274 with nearly 700,000 votes cast having 4 EV
WI by 11,382 with over 3 million votes cast having 10 EV
OR by 76,332 with nearly 2 million votes cast having 7 EV
MN by 98,300 with nearly 3 million votes cast having 10 EV
PA by 144,250 with nearly 5 million votes cast having 21 EV
MI by 165,437 with nearly 5 million votes cast having 10 EV
So, bring.it.on.
If you have been following the voter fraud cases from 2004 and the Soros campaign to defeat PRESIDENT Bush in that election, one might say PRESIDENT Bush won re-election by a landside.
Also note that we have heard little of Soros this election cycle. He got smart and funded both the candidates and Hillary, so he wins no matter who wins this year.
Welcome to FR, btw.
Then you have not been paying attention.
We saw An American Carol and enjoyed it. Only one problem with it, they didn’t slap Michael Moore enough!
We will PASS on this movie. We saw enough just in the many many many ads on TV.
The Libs sure LOVE to hate President Bush. I just Love him.
Now agree with everything he did? no.
Not so rare these days. You must be in a constant state of awe with our all volunteer military. I know I am!
Oliver Stone = If he were attacked by a brain-sucking alien it would starve to death.
Sadly, James Webb has joined Oliver Stone in the AMERICA DERRANGEMENT SYNDROME CROWD.
Yep sure will thank him for his service, Just like Murtha back then.
Both of these JERKS don’t get anything but scorn for me now!
bttt
You bet I am, our brave soldiers allow us to live without worry, finest military in the world.
What is the wolf cubs deal, never heard about that
I was strictly talking about the electoral college, not looking for a fight, and I’m sure there was fraud on both ends, usually happens in every election, but I will defer to your analysis on that, however Kerry lost states by a close margin as well.
Still the closest re-election in history.
It’s even more an interesting observation if you read CHristopher Hitchens’ piece on V.S. Naipaul in this month’s (new and improved redesign of ) The Atlantic (Monthly).
Really? Here is your exact statement...:
Technically Bush won in 2004 by about 140,000 votes in Ohio
The EC does not enter into that statement.
Im sure there was fraud on both ends
Please cite cases where republican fraud was prosecuted. I may have missed them, but every allegation I followed, charging the pubs with voter fraud, were found to have no merit as there was no evidence to be found to substantiate the charges.
however Kerry lost states by a close margin as well.
Yes, j Effin lost 4 states by close margins:
IA -1% w/ 1.5 mil votes cast & 7 EV
NV -3% w/ 829,000 votes cast & 5 EV
NM -1% w/ 750,000+ votes cast & 5 EV
CO +4% w/ 1,133,000 votes cast & 9EV
j Effin ONLY won 19 states; 4 states with more than 10% and 3 w/ little more than 20%:
IL by 10.34%
CT by -11%
MD by -13%
NY by 18.25%
VT by 20.14%
RI by -21%
MA by +25%
With the aforementioned 6 states that he won with 4% or less and those I posted above, that leaves 6 other states that he won with somewhere between 4-10%.
Meanwhile, PRESIDENT Bush won 31 states;
8 with more than 10%
7 w/ more than 20%
5 w/ more than 30% and
1 with more than 40% of the votes cast.
That leaves 6 states he won with somewhere between 4-10%.
Why did you join FR, Mike? Was it for the BDS Club?
Oliver Stone is a protagonist and a propagandist of the first order, coming from the most radical and extremist form of leftwing politics. His movies basically crap all over the American landscape and for good reason. He's an angry and cynical man.
This is not to say that the production values of his films aren't of the highest quality along with some good acting. That goes for Platoon. As with most contemporary directors, Stone is a liberal who offers movies with a message. Since most of his films are set in recent times, any deviation from actual current events and history itself, opens him up to severe criticism. And rightly so.
I watch movies mainly for entertainment. Life bombards us all with enough messages. Even "Wall Street" has worn thin since its original release. Stone's movies don't hold up well over time. Apocalypse Now-Redux is the definitive Vietnam War movie. Along with Full Metal Jacket. Two films that stand up well against the test of time, from two directors known for entertaining folks.
Rant over.
I found “Apocalypse Now” to be a bloated mess, and “Full Metal Jacket” ridiculous. There was an authenticity to “Platoon” that may well have been due to Stone’s combat service in Vietnam, which - needless to say - neither Coppola nor Kubrick shared.
Just a Nobody, are you going to act like Daily Kos and accuse me of Bush Derangement Syndrome because I stated that if John Kerry flipped 140,000 votes in Ohio he would have been President. Yes, that is correct, I WAS and AM talking about the electoral college. Figure it out and get back to me.
Look through my posts and you will learn why I joined but because a majority here are tolerant of other views, I will not get on a soapbox and defend myself.
It is all about the EC, correct me if I am wrong but in order to win a state you have to garner a majority of the votes, so when I state that the difference was Ohio, it means that if Bush lost Ohio, he loses the election, not rocket science.
If you don’t think that both sides don’t engage in voter fraud then you are walking around blind without a cane but since I have not studied this issue I will defer to you on this issue, which I stated in the earlier post.
The reason why I focused on Ohio is because it is the only state that could have flipped the election that was won by less than 3 percent.
Now if Kerry would have won, it would have been correct to say that if Bush would have won PA and that was less than 3 percent, he would have been President, the amount of states won is meaningful but irrelevant in terms of the electoral college because of population.
But as I stated previously, I’m not looking to fight, but if someone on this website is critical of Bush, don’t automatically smear them, unless you are a Bush cheerleader that thinks every decision he has made is gold, which is fine if you are like that, but just consider that many Americans don’t think Bush is infallible and they have every right making a critical statement of a particular decision without being tarred and feathered by you.
Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket and Platoon are all anti-war movies that highlight dehumanization. And all three are authentic.
However, neither Apocalypse Now or Full Metal Jacket came across as an anti-American. Platoon came from the mind of a true anti-American film maker who hates this country. A real scumbag. That doesn't seem to effect your praise of Stone. Whatever.
Frankly, I find movies more enjoyable when they have a surrealistic streak running through them. Which is why I found the Coppola and Kubrick films so entertaining. If I want realism, I'll watch a documentary.
The Army found them and shot them to hell. Then circulated the photos, just to make sure everyone understood they were stone-cold-dead.
