Well....it's over. How do you think Sara did?
Yep. Joe was busted.
She didn't come across as notably ignorant -- and was pretty well-informed on some complicated issues. She dodged a few questions, though, some of them more than once. (As did Biden, but not as often.)
She muffed a few easy ones (i.e., failed to defend McCain on the current financial crisis, while allowing Biden to claim that Obama somehow "did something" by writing a letter to the Sec. of the Treasury).
Overall I'd give her a B, which is pretty good. As to who won.... I think the MSM will call it a draw, or give a slight edge to Biden. But the fact that Palin clearly held her own should help to dampen the negative stereotype they've been trying to build.
Not to worry. The pollsters will have McCain/Palin down by ten come Monday and you can bet that they will stay that way or get worse as time goes on!
Now McCain needs to turn her lose all by herself in those battle ground states!
“Biden/Barack dont hesitate to equate McCain with Bush. McCain shouldnt hesitate to equate Biden/Barack to a despised democrat-controlled congress and their collective roles with Fannie/Freddie.”
100% correct. Someone in this thread said, more or less, that Sarah had given the campaign a great boost tonight, and wondered how long it’d be before McCain screwed it up. All possibility that can’t be dismissed.
It’s insane politics to not hammer and hammer on the real cause of the financial crisis, and McCain’s efforts to improve oversight of Freddie/Fannie.
I read you, but, as was apparent tonight, McCain is running on a ‘Why can’t we all get along’ theme, like it or hate it, and Palin had to sign on to that. You think that an all out war against Washington could win the election? In the current atmosphere, so do I, but that is not McCain’s strategery. We’ll have to wait and see.
I agree. When Biden said that they would have to throttle back on foreign aid increases I was sure she would jump on the hundreds of billions of increase promised by Obama and really get emphatic at the lunacy. But she made no attacks on foreign aid except for our oil revenues going to nasty regimes.
Still overall her manner of speaking into the camera made her a very popular personality as always. She also did a good job of citing her own experience as governor of a “huge” state.
“What did you think of the moderator?”
I thought she was OK. No debate is ever perfect because there is usually something more to be said, but you run out of time. Maybe the closest to a gotcha question was the one on gay marriage. Even though the question didn’t use that language, that was what it was about and Palin made a point to actually clarify the question.
You must have been watching SNL.
You know, I had the same thought....
“...80% of the Alaskan people approve of her......do you know there is not one congress critter or sleazy senator with years of service that could claim anything near that ..or ever could”
An excellent point that you should repeat often.
Well, he did talk about the Bosniacs. That was funny.
I thought she was barely adequate. She let way too many of Biden’s points go unanswered. I thought her answers lacked detail and occasionally bordered on platitudinous. I’m amazed in a good way by how well people here thought she did. I was watching PBS and even Mark Shields thought she did pretty well. David Brooks thought she did well. The historians thought she did pretty well though maybe a little folksy. Amazing to me but I’ll take it.
I’ll be interested in seeing Jay Nordlinger’s post-debate pointlets. His perceptions are usually similar to mine.
I am pinching myself that this isn’t a dream. Because I didn’t see things the way everyone else has. I think I saw things the way you did. I had to leave the room, because I could just imagine everyone laughing and making fun of her!
I learned today, that I do not know anything!! Praise the Lord! I am so happy that it turned out to be a victory!
I’m sorry - you are correct. I should have said “verifiable.” The point being that he gave specific, substantive answers to questions while Palin frequently retreated to the comfort of “Maverick,” “soccer/hockey moms” and “Joe Six-Pack” cliches.
As a debate scored by points, yes she lost, hands down. I don’t see how she could have won, when Biden knows McCain better than she does. She did what she could and I bet she’s glad it’s over. She definitely is more charming and much easier to look at - she has a professionalism and integrity that you normally don’t find in politics. I hope McCain can step up these final few weeks.
I think that’s mostly simply reflective of the types of Internet surfers who visit the respective sites — the numbers aren’t surprising to me. I’d imagine any FOX News poll would line up similar to Drudge’s.
“Of course, this doesnt make me the least happy, but at least Im not drinking the kool-aid.”
You must be drinking something.
