What do Freepers know about Alaska? (Gov. Palin's home state)

The DBM is taking pot shots at Alaska.

It might be useful to have a thread that discusses Gov. Palin's State.

Correction:

Trust me, for those who are not overly fond of winter, Alaska is not the place for you.

All I know about Alaska is that my dad went there last month and caught a buttload of salmon and halibut.

except for the part about snow melting on a daily basis. You find that in southeast (Juneau, Ketchikan, etc.), and nowhere else.

You of course are correct. You stated it much better.

I used to live in Eagle River from 2003 to 2007. Beautiful place. We were next to the VFW and saw lots of Eagles through the winter.

Just got this picture of an Alaska-style vehicle (with grandson aboard)! Note the alder trees.

They live on Meadow Creek with 8 ft. stream on back of their property.

I was downstream from them on Fire House Lane. We sold the house earlier this year.

We miss it. The area is very beautiful. But too far from family with health issues.

I’m sure we will go back someday, at least to visit.

The state bird the Ptarmigan. In Alaska there is a town that a group of miners were founding and trying to decide on the name. There were a lot of Ptarmigan in the area so they decided to name the town Ptarmigan. The only problem was...no one could agree on how it was spelled...so they ended up naming it Chicken...Chicken, Alaska...true story.

Many years ago, I took a three-week camping tour of Alaska via CampAlaska, a business out of Wasilla, now suspended due to the death of the owner.

It's a beautiful state. Via campsights and road houses, I saw Anchorage, Kodiak, the Kenai penninsula (Homer to Seward, and Resurrection Bay), Denali State Park, Manley Hot Springs, Fairbanks, the North Slope, and Deadhorse (Prudhoe Bay).

You are making me homesick with the pictures. I love Alaska but live in the lower 48...by necessity not choice.
Alaska is amazing. One needs to live there for awhile to fully experience it.

I quickly realized after being in Alaska we needed a better camera. A good zoom lens is must, sometime you don't want to be too close.

A lot of independent folks in AK. You have to know how to survive, especially up North. Also, everybody will offer to help you if you have car trouble in the winter.

Goldpanning is fun stuff, and duck hunting is great around the North Pole area.

I know it is good luck to pet an Alaskan moose's nose.

Hope you can...my wife would move there in a heartbeat, but I refuse to sell our place here (20 years of blood, sweat and tears, notwithstanding a small fortune) and so far she hasn't agreed to buy a second home up there...but I keep looking at property every time I go up there just in case she changes her mind.
I drive out Fire House Lane all the time, nice looking area!
