Opinions on hotdog and hamburger condiments (Vanity)
FR ^ | 9/19/08 | Domandred

My wife and I are having an argument. When she makes me a hamburger she insists on putting mayo on it. So we got into an argument over the proper condiments for hamburgers and hotdogs.

She insists on ketchup on her hotdogs. Mayo on her burgers. Mayo on hotdogs.

I believe ketchup has no business being on a dog (should be only some form of mustard) and hamburgers can get ketchup+mustard, but not mayo. Mayo is only for deli type sandwiches.

Opinions please.

I don’t believe I have EVER tried mustard on a hamburger. I am now starting to believe that maybe I have missed something and will give it a try on the next burger!

You want something really tasty, you put a fried egg on your burger. Plus mayo, tomatoes, cheese, bacon, salt, and pepper. Then you have a REAL Royal Red Robin burger, one of the best burgers in the world.

Use whatever tastes good to you on dogs and burgers, but one MUST have plenty of thick sliced Vidalia onions on both (if Vidalias aren’t available, then any onions will do).

I guess it is somewhat on how your mother fixed food for you. On a BLT I HAVE to have peanut butter. Mom always made them that way. Has anyone else heard of doing this??

I gave up on trying to get restaurants to do it for me, LOL!

We'll your having 2 all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles and onions on your sesame seed bun, then you're having mayo in the special sauce.

I used to do mayo on hamburgers. I stopped because I pretty much stopped with the mayo on my sandwiches (particularly because we buy low-fat and it doesn't taste the same).

Usually I'll slice up a pickle. It annoys the wife and my duaghter that I'll have pickle with hot dogs. Sure, I'd prefer sweet pickle relish, but I make do will dill pickle cut into spears.

And I tried roasted red peppers once when we didn't have tomatoes. Interesting substitute.

I'm a ketchup person, don't really use mustard. If I do, I prefer the deli mustard to the yellow stuff.

I usually only read food threads for the pictures. Apparently, Japan prefers mustard on hotdogs:

The world’s longest hot dog, made in the Akasaka Prince Hotel in Tokyo, officially recognized by Guinness as 60.3 metres long.

Pickle relish with mustard on a hot dog. No ketchup.

Mayo with ketchup mixed with mayo to make 1000 island dressing, cheese, lettuce and chopped white onions on a hamburger. No pickle, ruins the taste.

There is only one way to enjoy a hotdog to its full potential. You lightly toast the bun, smear some French’s-style yellow mustard on, put some COLD sauerkraut in the “crease” and add the HOT wiener. Maybe add some chopped onion. The meaty and the sour-salty, the hot and the cold—excellent.

You are BOTH wrong.

Mayo, ketchup and mustard all go on a hamburger.

Ketchup and mustard belong on hot dogs.

As for deli sandwiches, most get mayo but roast beef and pastrami get mustard, and ONLY mustard.

Now you know!

I like to put Thousand Island dressing on my hamburgers, with a slice of raw onion and lettuce. On a hot dog I like mustard, chopped raw onions, and chili. Sometimes I will put ketchup on the chili to zest it up a little more.

I love mustard on white breast of chicken sandwiches also.

Oh don't get me started on pastrami. Every time I find a good pastrami sandwich in town the place stops selling them shortly after I find out they have em.

Places that still have em don't have poor to average quality pastrami.

Still a few places I haven't tried in town though that I keep hearing have great pastrami sandwiches.

Oh good tip! That always bugs me about the bottom bun on a burger

A thin layer will do it, especially if you've toasted the bun.

Bon Apetit!
