The party goes on at Lafitte's in Exile in the French Quarter of New Orleans, Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008. The party goes on even though Hurricane Gustav is expected to pay a close call.

People should be able to live where they want. Houses and buildings can be built up over time.

People should be able to live where they want but not expect me to rebuild their house when the inevitable happens. There, fixed it.

“IMO, New Orleans should be relocated, as was discussed after Katrina. Either that, or Louisiana should establish a multi-billion dollar tax fund for the required periodic rescuing and rebuilding. Let them decide.”

Sadly, the majority of the people in New Orleans don’t pay any taxes and there’s a high probability that they are the ones who benefit the most from taxes paid by others...

My fear is that they’ll just leave the south but not go back to Mexico but come up north, this way.

To our benefit, winter is coming and the Great lakes are REALLY warm. That means a LOT of lake-effect snow this winter. We Upstate NYers can handle it, but.... that could drive them back down your way.

*sigh* There’s no winning I guess....

Tax payers shouldn’t have to keep paying for rebuilding though.

I’m sick of picking up the tab through taxes myself.

I’m with you on this one.

NO ONE can claim they didn’t know what an area was like when they moved there. If they want to take that risk, it’s theirs to take and pay for.

Whoa, WDSU guy just made a political statement without realizing it. They were talking about people hoping it wouldn’t come their way and he said “HOPE IS NOT A PLAN.”

Fine. Just don't ask me to pay for it.

I’m against grants. I think if we help people it should be thru low interest loans. If you have to pay it back..even a few dollars a month out of your check you will protect your property better the next time IMO.

Lookin' more and more like Hanna won't be a problem for the Gulf.

The women are home loading up the mini-van for the evac. Men were supposed to be buying batteries and diet coke:)

I don't want it going to NO either because they aren't ready yet. If one is heading my way, even though I have no control of where it is going, I feel bad about wishing it away...even for the Mexicans, who many live in shelter with little protection. The kings ranch people probably just roll their eyes but dissipating or blowing through the desert seem the best choices to me.

I just had a call from my sister in Cecelia, La. She tells me that tomorrow the state troopers will be allowing a contra for people to get on the freeway which is gridlocked. She is only trying to travel twenty miles into Lafayette to stay with our brother, who has no trees in his yard. And if necessary, they will have access to the Cajundome. She is lucky to have a tankful of gas as there is no more to be had in that area.

As an aside note. She told me that folks there were enraged with Nagin, dem mayor of NO. He was at the dem convention when Bobby Jindal, governor of La, called him and ordered him home. Nagin had a fit saying it was too early to prepare and Jindal threatened him with malfeason if he stayed. He left. giggle

Oh geez, that just reminded me we will see that pig face Mary Landrieu all over the TV next week. She is worse than Schumer about jumping in front of the cameras.

I think it depends on where it’s a cat 5 and how quick it weakens as well as how big the storm is. The GOM is like a big bowl though, so once water gets moving it’s gotta run into something before the energy dissipates.

I doubt it will be that strong at landfall, but it is looking more and more likely this will be one of the strongest northern GOM landfalls in some time.
