Flag Day and National Flag Week, 2008

A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America

The American flag has been our national symbol for 231 years, and it remains a beacon of freedom wherever it is flown. Since the Second Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes as our flag in 1777, it has stood for freedom, justice, and the resolve of our Nation.

When Francis Scott Key saw the American flag flying over Fort McHenry in 1814, he believed that liberty would triumph. The flag that inspired Key to write our National Anthem still energizes and emboldens the American spirit today. As our Nation faces the challenges of a new era, Old Glory reminds us that liberty can prevail over oppression.

Since the first days of our Republic, Americans have flown the flag to show their pride and appreciation for the freedoms they enjoy in this great Nation. Every day, Americans pledge their allegiance to the flag of the United States, and our troops carry it before them as they defend the liberties for which it stands.

On Flag Day and during National Flag Week, we remember those in uniform whose courage and sacrifice inspire us here at home. We also remember the rich history of one of our oldest national symbols and reflect on our duty to carry our heritage of freedom into the future.

To commemorate the adoption of our flag, the Congress, by joint resolution approved August 3, 1949, as amended (63 Stat. 492), designated June 14 of each year as "Flag Day" and requested that the President issue an annual proclamation calling for its observance and for the display of the flag of the United States on all Federal Government buildings. The Congress also requested, by joint resolution approved June 9, 1966, as amended (80 Stat. 194), that the President issue annually a proclamation designating the week in which June 14 occurs as "National Flag Week" and calling upon all citizens of the United States to display the flag during that week.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim June 14, 2008, as Flag Day and the week beginning June 8, 2008, as National Flag Week. I direct the appropriate officials to display the flag on all Federal Government buildings during that week, and I urge all Americans to observe Flag Day and National Flag Week by flying the Stars and Stripes from their homes and other appropriate places. I also call upon the people of the United States to observe with pride and all due ceremony those days from Flag Day through Independence Day, also set aside by the Congress (89 Stat. 211), as a time to honor America, to celebrate our heritage in public gatherings and activities, and to publicly recite the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this sixth day of June, in the year of our Lord two thousand eight, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-second.

GEORGE W. BUSH

Iowans will not wait for someone to come clean up their mess. We deal with tornados on a regular basis, but the flooding is faar more widespread than any tornado we’ve EVER seen.

We will get this cleaned up. It may take awhile, but we’ll get it done. With very little whining.

FWIW: As I type the TV is reporting Tornado Sirens going off in Iowa City. Sandbagging has stopped and the volunteers have taken cover.

I think I have solved the low connectivity problem. Instead of automatic I entered an IP, DG, DHCP and DNS. At first, my computer worked, but Greg's didn't so I changed the last 2 numbers in the IP. Then, Sarah's didn't work...so I changed the last 2 again. Now, they are all working.

I hope I didn't do anything illegal or unsafe. LOL

I chortled too soon. :( I rebooted my computer and pffft, the connection is gone again. I need to work on the steps some more. I’m writing them down now, I just need to remember the magic combination. I do know is it a Windoze problem with releasing the DNS addresses and registering them. But there is something else too. I will be working on it this evening.

I forgot we had a family reunion today. Very fun.

And as you have noticed, I am back. I had company after the reunion today, so I needed to put my laptop away with all the cords and modem. The step I forgot this morning was to unplug the ISP modem and let it recycle and clean itself up. Bingo! I am back.

I still can’t get my wireless card to work though... That’s for another day.

We had a family reunion today. We have officially moved the date for reunions to October. It was too hot. Way too hot, especially for those that are older, like Mom.

Glad you got your problem solved.

I have the pictures but I have two problems. One, I can’t get them onto this computer and two, they turned out fuzzy. If I can solve problem number one, I’ll post them anyway. I’ll try and take better pictures soon.

Dad and his new wife just left. The wife started discussing Nobama toward the end and I agree with her. But my dad, oh my dad, is just a radical democrat. I suspected it but I asked him point blank if he supported Nobama. He confirmed it. Then he said that he was supporting the witch. When she wasn’t selected he threw his support behind McLame. Then, he said that he investigated what Nobama has said and done and Dad feels that Nobama best supports his own positions.

My own dad! Where have I gone wrong?

We’ve got a lot of work to do before November.

Ours is always the 2nd week in June, which is right around my paternal great-grandfather’s birthday. It did get up to 90 degrees here, it was hot.

Tomorrow is Father’s Day, as you know. I went to the store to buy stuff to make pies. And when I came back, the connection wasn’t working again. And the IP address had changed. Rolling my eyes here. Had to tweak the steps again. My mantra is: Computers are an art, not a science.

I love October. It's my favorite month. And not just 'cuz it's football season, either.

I'm watching the local news and the first 15 minutes have been about all of the flooding problems throughout the state............and now the forecast for tomorrow.................thunderstorms.

Criminy.

Well, I’ve been wondering why we don’t ask the UN to help the people of Iowa. I’m certain they’d be able to provide all sorts of timely assistance.

(500 foot tall invisible sarcasm tag applied, of course)

Yep, Iowans will pick themselves up, exactly like the people of New Orleans SHOULD be able to do, but can’t/won’t.

We’re thinking of all you flooded folks, we’ve remarked we should call our friends in DM and check in, but haven’t gotten it accomplished yet.

Crikey, I just saw where Tiger Woods came from a poor start to being the leader of the US Open. This, after his wonderful performance yesterday plus recovering from knee surgery and missing the last several PGA tournaments.

He is truly a magnificent golfer.

Yummy ones. :) We have a tradition on my mom’s side of the family which is Pie Night. Everyone brings a pie or two and we eat pie and visit. That is what we are doing for Father’s Day. So...

I made banana cream pie (my father’s most favorite); Key Lime pie (my sister’s favorite), and creme caramel/flan. Another sister is bringing rhubarb pies, there are chocolate cream pies, cherry, apple, all sorts. Pie is not my favorite, so I usually don’t eat any. LOL.

My mom’s mother was a great pie maker. She kept trying to teach me how to make pie crust (I still buy frozen pie crusts.) She’d have four pie crusts all ready to fill and I’d still be trying to make the mixture the size of peas. And since I don’t like pie, I’ve really never made the effort to learn how to make good pie crust.

So for the banana cream pie, I did a Vanilla wafer crust. For the Key Lime pie, I did a graham cracker crust.

Wow, sounds like pie heaven.:)

I've never been able to make a decent pie crust.

I had a fantastic piece of blueberry pie at a family restaurant in South Dakota while we were on our vacation two weeks ago. Homemade by the owner's wife..........flakey crust.........yummy blueberry filling....freshly whipped cream......quite a treat.

Ha! Finally figured out the problem with my Internet connection. It is the wireless card and the program that comes with it. As soon as I uninstall it, everything works like a charm. Now to go back to AT&T and get a refund on the wireless card. I’m off to bed...
