Flag Day and National Flag Week, 2008

A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America

The American flag has been our national symbol for 231 years, and it remains a beacon of freedom wherever it is flown. Since the Second Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes as our flag in 1777, it has stood for freedom, justice, and the resolve of our Nation.

When Francis Scott Key saw the American flag flying over Fort McHenry in 1814, he believed that liberty would triumph. The flag that inspired Key to write our National Anthem still energizes and emboldens the American spirit today. As our Nation faces the challenges of a new era, Old Glory reminds us that liberty can prevail over oppression.

Since the first days of our Republic, Americans have flown the flag to show their pride and appreciation for the freedoms they enjoy in this great Nation. Every day, Americans pledge their allegiance to the flag of the United States, and our troops carry it before them as they defend the liberties for which it stands.

On Flag Day and during National Flag Week, we remember those in uniform whose courage and sacrifice inspire us here at home. We also remember the rich history of one of our oldest national symbols and reflect on our duty to carry our heritage of freedom into the future.

To commemorate the adoption of our flag, the Congress, by joint resolution approved August 3, 1949, as amended (63 Stat. 492), designated June 14 of each year as "Flag Day" and requested that the President issue an annual proclamation calling for its observance and for the display of the flag of the United States on all Federal Government buildings. The Congress also requested, by joint resolution approved June 9, 1966, as amended (80 Stat. 194), that the President issue annually a proclamation designating the week in which June 14 occurs as "National Flag Week" and calling upon all citizens of the United States to display the flag during that week.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim June 14, 2008, as Flag Day and the week beginning June 8, 2008, as National Flag Week. I direct the appropriate officials to display the flag on all Federal Government buildings during that week, and I urge all Americans to observe Flag Day and National Flag Week by flying the Stars and Stripes from their homes and other appropriate places. I also call upon the people of the United States to observe with pride and all due ceremony those days from Flag Day through Independence Day, also set aside by the Congress (89 Stat. 211), as a time to honor America, to celebrate our heritage in public gatherings and activities, and to publicly recite the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this sixth day of June, in the year of our Lord two thousand eight, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-second.

GEORGE W. BUSH

Any feedback on the sidebar situation?

I find it irritating because I sometimes log back on before I have been pinged. I use our listing in the sidebar to find the latest threads fast. But lately, we don’t even show up for five postings in our own sidebar!

Not yet, to my knowledge.

Well, now I'm confused.(easy for me)

I took Greg's Netgear adapter from his computer (same model as the one on my 'puter) and plugged it into mine. I am typing this from my computer. I plugged my adapter into Greg's computer and I get a low connectivity.

I've been working on this for months and now I discover that the adapter is at fault? Bah!

As I stated, I'm confused.

My favorite flag:

It flew over Ev's base on my birthday while he was deployed. It is now mine.:)

I am sure it has the pride of place in your home. I’m glad you have it as you had quite a bit in Ev’s successful deployment and career. I salute you, fellow PAM!

Just a little question. It appears the flag in the picture is at half staff. Do you know why?

checking in. My ISP drifted out this morning. I don’t know for how long,,, I just walked away when it died. And only came back to check it after lunch.

We remain high and dry. My Mother is 20 miles away, but there is a road under water between here and there. She is also on high ground and has plenty of groceries. The little creek a mile from her house is over the road leading to her house. Most likely it will receed in a day or so, unlike the major rivers that are going to take at least a week to receed.

That Ragged Old Flag of ours was retired and early this morning a new one was put up in it’s place. About the only time our flag isn’t flying is during a windy or rainy day, at night it’s lit.

As y’all know I never to seldom watch tv, but today I saw some of the flooding on tv this am. How devestating for those affected by it. My heart goes out to each and every Iowaian suffering from this event. I know they will pull up their socks and dive into whatever needs to be done, but right now the shock of this happening is disheartening. I chuckled at someones post wondering why we weren’t being subjected to 24/7 broadcasting of the suffering of the “little people” as we suffered through during Katrina. We’re dealing with a whole different mind-set in Ioway..one of self reliance and hard work as compared to communist type handouts and lazyness.

Were you going to post the picture you take of your flag?

Yes, if Barry Hussein O. is elected, our government will be, for all intents and purposes, completely controlled by one party. I cite the Supreme Court decision to grant habeas corpus and other rights to not only non-citizens but, for crying out loud, enemy combatants who have sworn to do everything in their power to destroy America.

If the radical leftist B.H.O. is elected, the Executive Branch will be under the complete control of the HARD left: Soros, moveon.org, etc. Subsequently, with probably 2 Supreme Court rtetirings within the first 2 years of B.H.O. they will be replaced by 2 horrendously leftist justices who will sail through the majority demoCRAT Senate to join the other 3 leftist justices, only now with a much greater bent toward the left with the liberal majority of the USSC, legislating from the bench like never before.

I know most everyone here knows this. I primarily post in hopes that some lurker who is leaning toward voting for this DANGEROUS FRAUD might at least have second thoughts.

The Supreme Court’s recent decision boggles my mind.
