I always get in on music threads after about 100 posts so I thought I'd start my own.
What is the best country music...old and new? Here's mine.
Buddy Miller
Kieran Kane
Billy Joe Shaver
Slaid Cleaves
Hayes Carll
LeeAnn Womack
Charlie Rich
Paul Burch
Thad Cockrell
I like all kinds of music. I've been on the western kick lately - Red Steagall, Marty Robbins, Michael Martin Murphy, ol Tex Ritter

Emmylou Harris, Chet Atkins - Precious Memories
You’re right!
The Carter Family
Bill Monroe
Doug Kershaw
Hank Williams
And here I am at 105.
And I don't even have a comment to make.
Oh well.
Don’t want to see this thread die. I’m getting all kinds of good recommendations. I’ve got to add Tom T. Hall. He’s writing every other hit in bluegrass right now!Jim Lauderdale has found his niche in bluegrass. What a natural voice for it.
I’m on a roll! Here I’m talking to myself. Wanted to add Mark Knopfler. Highly recommend The Notting Hillbillies and the classic Mark Knopfler & Chet Atkins “Neck and Neck.”
Just bought a CD by Little Big Town. First new country act in a long time that I’ve liked.
Tom T. could tell a good story. You could actually visualize it. Gifted man.
David Allan Coe
He sang the perfect country and western song.
Bob Wills, Lefty Frizzell, Hank sr, Hank Snow, Carl Smith, Bobby Bare, Webb Pierce, Hank Thompson, Louvin Brothers, Buck Owens.
My son is in Nashville trying to make it as a singer songwriter. He has been overwhelmed by the help and encouragement he has received by most of the artists he has met. Jim Lauderdale is one of the guys who has gone out of his way to always have something good to say everytime he sees my son.
Every one take a look at his youtube videos and I hope you enjoy them. http://www.youtube.com/user/dthompsn56
There is only one country singer, 1 part-time country singer and the rest are pop acts. That right there demonstrates the problem in country music, Keith Urban is no more country than Bob Marley. These people know that even less acts making it in pop/rock so they call themselves country to have exposure to a larger market and they pollute to country music scene.
And he could eat up his weight in groceries....
I hear you & I hate it. American Idol is contributing to it as well. I don’t mind these people being on “pop” radio (it’s where they belong) but they are destroying country music.
I’m at the point where I’d be happy with a “George only” radio station.
LOL!
His daddy would use him for alligator bait.....
My favorite term is "Y'allternative"
In the old-school bent, I've been listening to The Sundowners, a band that held court in a basement dive bar in Chicago next to the Greyhound station for something like thirty years of five-nights-a-week shows.

Most of the tracks were recorded live in bars over the decades, complete with beer mugs clinking in the background. Seriously real deal.
Speaking of Jim Lauderdale, I recently saw this documentary on PBS about shape note singing called “Awake My Soul: The Story of the Sacred Harp.” Jim Lauderdale did the narration. Great documentary. Although I’m a multi-generation Southerner, I was not aware of shape note singing until I started hearing about it. Then I saw and heard an example of it in “Cold Mountain.”
I’ll have to ask my relatives in the Florida panhandle if they were ever exposed to it. How about anyone else out there? That’s about as country as you can get.
