Those Catholics who continue to vote Democrat, sometimes do so because of a long held tradition in their families. In the Northeast and the RustBelt, there are so many families who are of ethnic origins that were heavily Catholic, but also blue-collar, and therefore, heavily Union. Those folks have always believed that the Democrats were for the "little guy", and that the Republicans were for the business owners, so were against union workers. The other group of Catholics who consistently vote Democrat are those who have put the Social Justice issues above the Life issues. Again, they think that Republicans hate poor people, hate homosexuals, and love war, so they just won't vote for them. That's the Jesuit and Pax Christi influence

The abortion issue is the ONE issue that broke that Democrat Party lock on Catholic votes. Many Catholics will vote for a pro-life Democrat in a State or Congressional election, but won't vote Democrat in a Presidential election, because no pro-life Democrat can make it that far.

And it's the union, not the Church, that provided them with an upper-middle-class lifestyle and lifetime security.

Every Catholic I see in church personally lives according to conservative principles. They are generally appalled by the average RAT politician, especially since conservatism in that party has been suppressed. But if faced with a hard choice between their faith, and their party, bye-bye Faith.

The Catholic Church in Michigan recognizes reality, which is why the Archbishop has not excommunicated Gov. Granholm (democRAT), and ignores protests that she also is a eucharistic minister at her parish.

Of course, the Catholic hierarchy would still be about 98% liberal, if abortion was taken out of the picture.
