I was watching some video of it on the news the other night with my older sister. It was she whose home was washed away in Katrina, and has been listening to folks in other parts of the country talk about how stupid she and others are for living on the Coast. She commented, with tongue very firmly planted in cheek on how silly those folks were for living along the river. ;o)

One just never knows what kinds of natural disasters will strike, and in which part of the country. We just do what we can. But I really feel for those folks, because it will take them a while to get their lives back together.

The floods here are higher than anyone has ever seen. Literally, we crossed the high water mark recorded 150 years ago today and we expect to go another 4-5 feet higher, here. Down in Iowa City, there were some coffer dams in the river to allow for some construction, and some neighborhoods that would never otherwise have been in the flood zone are under water.

Now, some folks did build in a flood zone and I don’t have much sympathy for them, but there’s hundreds and hundreds who weren’t underwater back in 93, and are now.

But I really feel for those folks, because it will take them a while to get their lives back together.

Everyone but Katrina residents who still aren't out of government housing... I am sick and tired of hearing about them. Iowa and the midwest is undergoing a much larger disaster and the news is hardly mentioning it. Because in places that are not liberal hellholes we shut up and rollup our sleeves instead of whining on TV.
