The Hobbit Hole XXXVI - O! Water cold we may pour at need...

Posted on 05/03/2008 8:48:06 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

I dunno, a house without a basement just doesn't feel natural, to me.

There are no houses with basements anywhere in Florida, as far as I know. Older ones are post and beam, newer ones are concrete slabs. Basements are another way to build a swimming pool.

WooHoo house hunting! Good luck with your search!

Even though it looks like it will be well into 2009 before we move, I'm going to look at a few houses while I'm downin MS in mid-August, getting the youngest settled into college. We're fixing to be empty nesters, and though we love our kids dearly, we're looking forward to it!

Agree with you there. Basements are key. Especially in tornado country.

Well, I worked last night...

And once again, it was absolutely awful. I had three total care patients older than 90, which means they require complete assistance with turning and pulling up in the bed, feeding, cleaning up when they soil themselves and much more. One of them required a blood transfusion...which requires more intense care. Another required an extensive dressing change, another’s IV blew out under her skin and had to be re-started. There was only one other nurse on the floor and she couldn’t help me. No nurse tech. I was an hour late getting out.

I got in the car and my back was killing me, my face was numb, I was shaking all over and I had a splitting headache...and I needed to go to the bathroom but didn’t realise it till I got in the car and relaxed a little bit. Thankfully Steve was driving, my vision was so blurry.

I turned to Steve and said “Why am I doing this when I could be doing private duty? This job is going to kill me and I mean it.”

I was so stressed, I couldn’t sleep last night. Even this morning, my face is still tingling.

The very sad thing is, if I’d just had a tech to help me, I could’ve done it without any trouble. I was so overwhelmed with the non-professional stuff that I couldn’t get to the things that required a professional. It makes me sad, because I love doing the professional stuff so much...I feel like I’m good at it and it hurts my feelings that I am killing myself just trying to stay afloat instead of doing what I love and went to school for.

S’posed to be hot today. Already 91 degrees out there...s’posed to get up to what? 105?

I’ve got the baby bunnies in the house and the buck and does under the shade tree in damp grass. Got frozen bottles of water to put in their cages after lunch.

I figure pride. The desire not to give up. The love of the job. Friends I’ve made, in spite of trying not to...I couldn’t help it.

And certainly the financial stability it affords us...private duty isn’t as consistently available.

But I can’t work at all if I’m dead.

It reached 105°F here yesterday, s'posed to do that again today I think. Tomorrow we might get some hurricane rain, though.

After living 'up North' for over 28 years, I know what you mean. The houses on slabs down on the Gulf Coast look like they're sinking into the ground! LOL!

Depending on where we live, we may end up having to build up 10' or more off the ground, because of newly designated 'flood plains'. That's OK, we can avoid the garage sticking off the side or back of the house and just park under it. At our age, though, if we have to build up that much, we WILL be putting in an elevator! ;o)

It’s all got me very down.

I should go thrift store shopping...that always perks me up. And I believe Staples is having a back to school sale today. 2 GB thumb drives for $11, I hear.

The boys are doing a fish collection event with Steve today...so they’ll be in a creek all day and should have a good time.

Me...I don’t see the point in collecting fish and counting them and then putting them back. I say heat up the skillet!

But I can’t work at all if I’m dead.

Tis true, but remember, even it's a little bit of extra money, it all helps, so if you went back to private duty, you may not be able to save up for that bit of land as quickly, but it would likely mean you'd be around to enjoy it! ;o)

I went into A-Fib again on Sat. morning, and am still there. But I don't have the weakness and clammy feeling I had the last time, so I haven't called the Doctor, because I just don't want to have to be stuck in the hospital and have to do another Cardiac Version. I've had this problem for years, and the A-Fib always went away before, so I'm seeing how long it takes to go away this time. I'm on Warfarin, so I know my anti-coagulant levels are good, so there's not much of a chance of throwing a clot, so that's why I'm comfortable waiting it out. Also, I want to prove that it can be done, because I'm going to MS in a couple of weeks, then to Perdido Key for a week in Sept., and I want to know that even if I go into A-Fib while I'm either place, that it will go away on it's own. I don't want to have to go into the hospital every time.

Well, you’ll have to decide what you want to do then.

But it’s not normal to have a numb face, tremors and blurry vision just getting off work.

I gotta tell you a little funny story, sis...

I have this co-worker...really nice girl, fairly new nurse, very smart...lot of fun to work with. Anyway, I was tellin’ her about my meat rabbits. She says “You’re raising meat rabbits!!??” “Mmmm-Mmmm!”

I replied that yes, I was and she said “If you bring me a couple, I’ll cook them up for you and we’ll share it at work!” I told her that sounded like an excellent idea!

So I was sitting at the dinner table with Steve the other day and I was recounting the conversation. I told him “I’m going to bring her some meat and she’s going to fix it up good!”

Steve started protesting!

“I can cook it!” says he...”I’m a good cook, you know...you don’t have to go taking our meat off and letting someone else cook it! I can do it!”

“Steve,” says I...”My friend is black.”

“Oh.”, he replied sheepishly.
