    Okay ...
  1. Back up all your data. And don't just copy My Documents; also copy the Application Data folder, and the data hiding underneath the installed Program Files folders. Make sure you back up everything that means anything to you, and accept the fact that you're going to lose something that was vital.
  2. Go to the computer manufacturer's website, and download the latest versions of the BIOS (basic input/output system) and device drivers for your computer. Apply the BIOS upgrade before reinstalling the operating system.
  3. While on the website, search diligently for an operating system reinstallation guide. Every computer has its reinstall idiosyncracies; best if you follow manufacturer's recommendations.
  4. Gather together the CDs of all the applications (Microsoft Office, Photoshop, etc.) you plan to reinstall. If you installed the application from a downloaded file, make sure you have a written list of the websites where the files are located.
  5. Alter the boot sequence so that the CD precedes the hard drive. Every time you boot your computer, it checks various drives to see which one is bootable. The standard boot sequence for most systems is: floppy drive, hard drive, CD ROM drive. Somewhere, probably in the BIOS, there's a way to change the setting. Move the CD to the front of the line.
  6. Put the XP CD in the drive, then reboot the computer. The computer should boot from the XP CD. It will examine your system, causing the boot to last several minutes.
  7. Check the partitioning of the drive. Some computer manufacturers set up small partitions for utilities or for restores. Unless you feel comfortable wiping that information, leave the partitions be.
  8. Install the operating system, formatting the hard drive's largest partition. Don't use a quick format.
  9. Once the operating system is installed, install the device drivers as recommended by the computer manufacturer.
  10. Update your operating system with the latest software patches. Depending on how old your version of XP is (original, service pack 1 or service pack 2), you will have at least 100+ patches to download and install, with at least three reboots to keep things interesting. Perform all updates; they really do matter.
  11. Once the drivers are installed, install applications.
  12. Go to the website of each application, and install any updates there.

And that should do the trick.

See how easy????

Basementcat has become Outdoorcat again. He’s just hanging out on the porch, chowing down on cat food and accepting our pats and scratches as his due. He’s ventured out to check out the surrounds, but they are pretty wet, so he comes right back. LSA

Heh.

Heisenberg's Law of Cat Probability (Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle as Applied to Cats) It is not possible to predict where a cat actually is, only the probability of where it "might" be. As soon as you know where it is, it will move.

SirKit's Dad was a Sergeant in the Artillery, and was scheduled to take part in the invasion of Japan. Thankfully, that never happened.

(I'm not trying to play one-upsmanship, but...) Papa went in ahead of that invation laying communications wire.

Mr. K. didn’t have any qualms about the atomic bombs being dropped. He figured that kept him alive.

Evenin’ all. Purty good day here, for the most part.

Luke and I spent five hours at the pool. I spent the last three under an umbrella, but am still sunburned. I kept Luke covered in SPF 30, but he’s still rather tomato-esque. But a good time was had by most.

Mrs. spent the day taking rides on the Nana coaster. She’s got pneumonia in one lung and hasn’t been feeling well. But she’s breathing okay and they’re keeping her at the nursing home. And so it continues...

Abby eats, sleeps and goes to the box. But she doesn’t move much beyond that. I’ll check in with thevet this week.

SPF 30 and he still got burned like that? Was it 100 degrees outside?

Heh, that was a good one and absolutely true. Someone has spent a lot of time observing cats.

Gypsy had a nice long walk and is presently resting though ever aware for the opening of the refrigerator or any movement toward the kitchen.

Evening Corin - that was a good long pool session, hopefully adult beverages were available. We had some sun, quite a bit of rain. Radar shows we’ll likely have more tonight.

Saw quite a flag display along one street while on our walk. About eight houses had several flags each. Just the same four on our street; we usually have them up, weather permitting.

It was in the 80s all day, not a cloud in the sky. And he spent 50 minutes out of every hour in the water.

Sadly, no adult beverages allowed during regular pool hours. It’s a license/liability thing. Although a few of us have been known to bring our “special cups” I didn’t get around to that today.

The worse thing I saw was at 3:00 p.m. for the moment of silence. People got quiet and then a young lady offered a simple prayer and sang The National Anthem.

I immediately stood, and so did a handful of others. But there were over 100 people there and less than 10 of us standing.

Helluva way to teach your children about respect for the flag.

Amazing, simply amazing. we concur; you’d have thought more would participated,.

Which reminds me, getting toward dusk, I’ll bring the flag in. The contractor across the street flies his all night, but he’s got a flagpole and a light on it.

Got the last of the friends out the door a couple hours ago and now we’re recovering.

Some bad tornadoes went through fifty miles north last night and knocked down a whole town. We had a storm and sirens, and spent some time in the basement, but that was it.

Yup, brought Papa’s flag in a bit ago. I had a nylon all-weather flag that I left up after 9/11 (we always have the front light on). But it faded and I took it down. Papa’s flag is cotton, so it only flies on sunny days.

We had it flown over the Capital for one of his birthdays.

Good to hear y’all are OK! I thought the tornadoes weren’t supposed to be in your immediate vicinity, but you can never be sure where those suckers are gonna go.

We took down our flag holder when we painted the house last year, and with winter coming on, and the plans to put a porch on the front, we just never put it back up.
