We went to the vet and I was amazed. The answer was of course pain pills, and the vet went back to the owner's office at least 4 times. Each time it was a different story as to why they can't give pain pills (”we're a corporation, now”). I suspect there are people who scam vets for pain meds.
Anyway, the last trip out of the office was a “quality of life” consult. In other words, why not kill the dog. We managed to get a three day supply of oxycodone pain pills and not kill the dog (although the strength was 4X what mine was). Anyway, we're ditching that vet and trying another today.
But, what is the deal with pain meds? Another dog I had years ago had back pain and I went to the pharmacy and filled a script !! The pharmacist said it happens all the time (horses, cows, etc)
I try to give our Elsa a couple of baby aspirin a day for her hind quarters and glucosamine.
Good for you for finding a new vet. I hope this one hears your wishes.
Cripes! If my family used that vet's logic, Greg and I would have been put down years ago. Sheesh!
Gentle hugs for your ((yellow lab)).
Rave, what's the name of that stuff I've seen advertised on TV that w/daily squirts into the arthritic dog's drinking water helps it to move more easily?
Thanks, lysie!, for still another delicious breakfast.
My 9 year old lab mix is starting to limp due to hip/back pain. She doesn’t whine, but she takes forever to stand or sit and she can barely go up and down stairs. Some days are better than others.
:(
Raven, so sorry about your lab. Tough to face.
A few years ago, I needed medicine for my dog and I was given the option of going to a pharmacy forit. The catch was of course, I had to go to a particular one that carried the right dosage.
My former assistant, used to give her dog her anti-inflammatory since it was cheaper than the dog's script. Go figure.
Glad you are finding another vet. The last vet who pulled that trick on me wante d to put down an 8 month old German shephard who sliced her achilles tendon. A dog orhto sugeon and a $1000.00 + later, she was fine; lived to be 13 when cancer got her.
