Word For The Day, Wednesday, April 16, 2008 - semelparous
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary Word of the Day ^ | 04/16/2008

Posted on 04/16/2008 4:17:50 AM PDT by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

semelparous • \seh-MEL-puh-rus\ • adjective

reproducing or breeding only once in a lifetime

Example sentence:

Each year the semelparous salmon return to the stream where they hatched to spawn, and they die soon thereafter.

Did you know?
The combining form "-parous" was first used in English by the 17th-century physician and writer Sir Thomas Browne, who wrote about organisms that were "multiparous" ("producing more than one at a birth"), "oviparous" ("producing eggs that develop outside the maternal body"), and "viviparous" ("producing living young instead of eggs from within the body"). The suffix is based on the Latin verb "parere," meaning "to give birth to," which is also a relative of the word that gave us "parent." "Semelparous," the youngest offspring of "-parous," was born in 1954. Its other parent is "semel," the Latin word for "once."

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Speaking of "humpday" (in a couple of ways), I don't believe that giraffa camelopardalis are semelparous...

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but Carter had two sons along with the daughter.

Ah, yes, forgot about that...

Well, the good news is that in the nearly thirty years since their old man has been booted out of the White House, none of them has been able to make a political career. I guess that makes them...forgettable!

As soon as I saw the definition of semelparous, the first thing that crossed my mine was “isn’t wonderful that HillBilly fits this definition.

Oh, by the way, does it seem as though Bill is spaced out a lot later? On drugs again??????

None of my animals nor I have been semelparous. Thank the good Lord for that. But I am an adopted mother of two dogs and a kitten, the rest of them I bought or inherited.

The kitten last night decided she did not want any placemats on the dining room table. She took all four away. They were all over the house. This is not the first time she has done that with placemats. She thinks she has a brood of kittymats. We put two back on the table just to see what she’ll do tonight.

Here’s a silly story about what happened to me and STDs.

Went to my gyn for the annual check up after the ex was gone. She told me to be careful with STDs. I thought she said “SST.” Never heard of an STD.

I told her I didn’t fly to NY to ride the SST. She was howling on the ground. Naivete at its worst.

But then she verbally gave me a list of STDs. It was long, and I knew three of them. But who in their right mind today would have sex unless they knew their partner VERY well?
