Human Traits
self | April 10, 2008 | swampsniper

I often hear someone say, I hate those birds, they are messy, nasty, greedy, etc, funny thing, the birds with the most human traits often top the hate chart! Grackles aren't universally loved, Pelicans are, it seems, doesn't matter to me, I don't have time to act stupid. If I had to be a bird, a Grackle would be just fine! Pelicans are easier to photograph, but Grackles have more fun!

birds are like people insofar as something so beautiful can be so ever-loving nasty.

My favorites are hummingbirds. I have four feeders just waiting for them to return to my area of MO, which they will in about a week.

They are so fierce! And they way they challenge one another, and soar, swoop, and stop on a pinpoint in mid-air—lovely lovely creatures.

Last year one flew down to inspect the mastiff, who was sitting on the deck. A foot apart, face to face, they looked at each other for maybe 10 seconds—I was on the lounge, holding my breath, it was amazing.

In the evening, they all come down to load up on nectar for the night; 30-40 of them at a time, making that little “chip-chip” noise, the swooping hummmmms...I could watch them for hours.

If a feeder is empty, they will come look in the windows for me, fly side to side as though on a swing, to let me know I need to take care of them.

When the sun is just right, they look like flying jewels...

I always thought grackles were sort of pretty.

Kind of like a miniature crow with some extra color and a more vertical tail.

Some day, I really will try to take and post some wood duck pics.

Those are beautiful pictures...One of the things it’s fun to do is stand right beside the feeder at the busy time, they fly all around my face and shoulders, and you can be so close...

I love the variety of birds in Southern MO. Amazing and beautiful.
