Word For The Day, Wednesday, April 9, 2008 - stygian
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary Word of the Day ^ | 04/09/2008

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

stygian • \STIJ-ee-un\ • adjective, (often capitalized)

1. of or relating to the river Styx
2. extremely dark, gloomy, or forbidding *

Example sentence:

When the power went out in the building, the halls and stairwells were plunged into stygian darkness.

Did you know?
"Stygian" comes to us (by way of Latin "stygius" and Greek "stygios") from "Styx," the name of the principal river in Hades, the underworld of the dead in Greek mythology. This is the river over which Charon the boatman was said to ferry the spirits of the dead; the Greeks and Romans would place a coin in the mouth or hand of the deceased to serve as fare. It is also the river by which the gods swore their most binding oaths, according to the epics of Homer. English speakers have been using "stygian" to mean "of or relating to the river Styx" since the early 16th century. From there the meaning broadened to describe things that are as dark, dreary, and menacing as one might imagine Hades and the river Styx to be.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

You have to see this: Michelle Nobama's brother looks exactly like her

Look down at the third picture - unreal. Oh and notice the quote from him regarding schools where their father said not to pick a college based on cost, but to pick the best school. He also went to Princeton - poor downtrodden?????

it's funny, i was just telling xsteen yesterday that when i was at Pitt, i would often leave my single dorm room to head over to the cathedral of learning in the evening to work on a paper without the distractions that being in my room would entail. she said, dang, mom, you didn't even have a computer, what could be distracting you in your room? i have no idea, but i was distracted and i loved going to the cathedral and finding a little nook or cranny to set up shop in

yeah, something about their upbringing doesn’t strike me as being all that humble as far as those things go. that is amazing though, they are very similar looking!

This stygian article by Camille Paglia exposes her contempt for the the "men" Hillary attracts to her campaign. A worthy quote:

the male staff who Hillary attracts are slick, geeky weasels or rancid, asexual cream puffs.

All in all, she sums Hillary and her "men" up quite nicely.

Lata folks......I am off to Miss Ava's where there is no computer for the day.

That’s called a “high fi.” My mom still has hers.

You may not have gone to college with a stereo, but you had a single room. That’s luxury. LOL

I’ll bet your two teen aged daughters would be. One of them is of legal age, so she can go if she can afford it.
