Word For The Day, Wednesday, April 9, 2008 - stygian
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary Word of the Day ^ | 04/09/2008

Posted on 04/09/2008 5:54:57 AM PDT by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

stygian • \STIJ-ee-un\ • adjective, (often capitalized)

1. of or relating to the river Styx
2. extremely dark, gloomy, or forbidding *

Example sentence:

When the power went out in the building, the halls and stairwells were plunged into stygian darkness.

Did you know?
"Stygian" comes to us (by way of Latin "stygius" and Greek "stygios") from "Styx," the name of the principal river in Hades, the underworld of the dead in Greek mythology. This is the river over which Charon the boatman was said to ferry the spirits of the dead; the Greeks and Romans would place a coin in the mouth or hand of the deceased to serve as fare. It is also the river by which the gods swore their most binding oaths, according to the epics of Homer. English speakers have been using "stygian" to mean "of or relating to the river Styx" since the early 16th century. From there the meaning broadened to describe things that are as dark, dreary, and menacing as one might imagine Hades and the river Styx to be.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

VRWCboy loves that song. It has been used on the soundtrack for some of the shows he likes to watch (most notably “Supernatural”) and at our High School football games over the stadium sound system during the pregame activities.

When I was 10, this song didn't make a lot of sense to me:

Eddie, now don't you run
You know you're a bootlegger's son
And you saw just what it's done to the others
Eddie, now don't you run
It's the end of all your fun
And you saw just what they've done
To your brothers

Funny you mentioned South Park because Sexual Harrassment Panda is going to be visiting my state's attorney general's office. It sounds like my AG's condo is one swinging place. Did I mention he idolizes Elliot Spitzer....

Styx was my second concert ever, my first arena show. “Renegade” is the song where you stomp your feet to make the rafters roar.

Hillary is brooding, stygian, her campaign on its last cankles legs. Apparently, she is staying to the bitter end. Putting party before country and Clinton before party is what she does, as tying or surpassing Obama at this stage seems pretty far-fetched.

The Clintons’ tax returns show a stingy man married to a lesbian who goes into a gay snit (not that there’s anything wrong with that) whenever they donate to anything but a Clinton-run foundation.

Bill is away a lot, chasing that which is tangy, sporting his trademark alcohol-addled bulbous nose, and a gin sty under his eye; one more tiny sag for the bags there and it will be back to Hillary’s plastic surgeon.

When I schedule a flight, I look at the A/C type and always avoid flights that use MD80. I hate those planes. Fokker 100 is just as bad. I try to get a 757 or 767 whenever possible.
