In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
stygian \STIJ-ee-un\ adjective, (often capitalized)
1. of or relating to the river Styx
2. extremely dark, gloomy, or forbidding *
Example sentence:
When the power went out in the building, the halls and stairwells were plunged into stygian darkness.
Did you know?
"Stygian" comes to us (by way of Latin "stygius" and Greek "stygios") from "Styx," the name of the principal river in Hades, the underworld of the dead in Greek mythology. This is the river over which Charon the boatman was said to ferry the spirits of the dead; the Greeks and Romans would place a coin in the mouth or hand of the deceased to serve as fare. It is also the river by which the gods swore their most binding oaths, according to the epics of Homer. English speakers have been using "stygian" to mean "of or relating to the river Styx" since the early 16th century. From there the meaning broadened to describe things that are as dark, dreary, and menacing as one might imagine Hades and the river Styx to be.
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

Thanks for all the good Styx earworms-”Renegade” is my favorite Styx song. I heard this on the way home and have been humming it-
In the shuffling madness
Of the locomotive breath,
Runs the all-time loser,
Headlong to his death.
He feels the piston scraping
Steam breaking on his brow
Thank God, he stole the handle and
The train won’t stop going
No way to slow down.
He sees his children jumping off
At the stations one by one.
His woman and his best friend
In bed and having fun.
He’s crawling down the corridor
On his hands and knees
Old Charlie stole the handle and
The train won’t stop going
No way to slow down.
He hears the silence howling
Catches angels as they fall.
And the all-time winner
Has got him by the balls.
He picks up Gideon’s Bible
Open at page one
God stole the handle and
The train won’t stop going
No way to slow down.
that is great tull!! i have been meaning to ask you if the ghosties with the mosties have been up to anything lately?
Congratulations!
Just the usual heard footsteps and doors opening/closing, but nothing drastic-they only really act out when it storms. The TV was on and tuned to Animal Planet when I got home one day last week-I’d turned it off before I left, and it was on Fox news- so either the spooks did it or Husky girl and the cats wanted to watch something.
dang, loosh and chanel don’t know how to work our remote! they are working my last nerve here though. you can tell the days that i go into the ofc bc they act up like holy hellions when i get home on those days.
One May, I believe, the Fort Worth area had such a bad hail storm the hail was coming through the roofs and siding of homes!
I think we still have that album.
she hasn’t mentioned anything today and i was just talking to her.
When were we talking circumcision?...uh, WHY would we talk circumcision.
Gideon checked out
And he left it, no doubt
To help with good Rocky's revival
i saw it on the plane and it was a great movie!
Done.
You forget that due to UD's proximity to the home of God's favorite football team there is a zone of protection that diverts the severe weather away from the UD campus. Brutal storms can shut down DFW Airport and send the entire area into a panic, but the really bad weather tends to pass right around the UD campus.

I remember that well. It was the opening day of Mayfest (first Friday in May) and the hail caused a lot of damage and some pretty serious injuries to some of the revelers. There were some cars that were totaled by the hail damage.
It's the zone of protection, I tell you!
It’s not protection, He just pities y’all. Don’t even know how to finish a roof or what jerseys to wear at home.
Yes you are correct - it was Mayfest. There was a girls softball tourney going on as well and we passed many vehicles on I20 coming home from the DFW area that had horrible hail damage. I recall one car headed to Midland that had cardboard covering almost every window and the windshield was in really bad shape - I wasn't really sure how he was driving to be honest.
you promised me and it appears to be holding!!
um, what’s gonna happen to UD when they move to the new stadium???
All of todays news is to stygian . Gack! Sick of the policians, yech, Every where I turn they are there with their stygian outlooks.
