In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
stygian \STIJ-ee-un\ adjective, (often capitalized)
1. of or relating to the river Styx
2. extremely dark, gloomy, or forbidding *
Example sentence:
When the power went out in the building, the halls and stairwells were plunged into stygian darkness.
Did you know?
"Stygian" comes to us (by way of Latin "stygius" and Greek "stygios") from "Styx," the name of the principal river in Hades, the underworld of the dead in Greek mythology. This is the river over which Charon the boatman was said to ferry the spirits of the dead; the Greeks and Romans would place a coin in the mouth or hand of the deceased to serve as fare. It is also the river by which the gods swore their most binding oaths, according to the epics of Homer. English speakers have been using "stygian" to mean "of or relating to the river Styx" since the early 16th century. From there the meaning broadened to describe things that are as dark, dreary, and menacing as one might imagine Hades and the river Styx to be.
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

try to keep up, marteen! didjoo see my box of babushka kitties that i brought for you!
how do you feel about rebel yell and white wedding>? I totally love to crank those up in the vehicle! did you see the Wedding Singer when Billy Idol was on the plane?
They used to be my favorite artists back when I was at Big Cracker Med School. I know all the words to just about everything they ever recorded, especially that one. “Me, Myself and Irene” featured a soundtrack of new artists doing covers of old SD songs like “Barrytown,” “Bodhisatva,” and “Reeling in the Years.”
dang. yer deep.
hall and oates are better.
They are good but they lack the depth and passion of Steely Dan.
the hazzards have been live on DC 101 performing it, and it is hilarious!
We have Architect's Leap. Here's what you see as you fall.
When I was there, there was a chalk outline body at the bottom.
A+ for Billy Idol.
quite nice!
prefer the aerosmith!

Responding to recent charges leveled against him, Nittany Lion basketball player Stanley Pringle told police he was touching his penis but was not masturbating in the Pattee Library stacks last Thursday.
Pringle told police he has “a bad habit of putting his hand down his pants,” and demonstrated for the officer by placing his hand down the front of his sweatpants, according to the complaint.
“Why would I need to masturbate?” he told police. “This is how I chill, ma’am.”
i am....speechless....
Thanks for the clever kudos.
