Ditto, MamaBear.
Praying for Trooper and SPM. Also praying for Dutchess as she mourns the loss of Rusty.
It is amazing how fast the baby birds grow. My baby Finches have flown away, but we have another nest with at least 3 babies.
Those BlueJay Parents could probably do a number on Chachi. Better keep an eye on him.
I will need to get the Garden book out before I try dividing them. I would hate to lose them.
Oh, yeah. A couple days ago he wandered too close to the nest and one of the jays dove at him and must have grazed his back because Chachi let out a shriek and kept looking at his hind end. He wasn't hurt, but it sure scared him. I will be very happy when this little one is able to fend for himself and I don't have to be so worried about Chachi being attacked out in his own yard.
You haven't had any problems with the scrub jays going after the finches? I had that happen with a finch family that built their nest in a hanging planter at our other house. The scrub jays got the babies. :-(
I really don't like being involved in these dramas. I feel responsible for the defenseless ones. But this is nature, it is survival of the fittest. I understand it, I just don't want to witness it.
I thought, when baby birds left the nest they flew off and were fully capable of taking care of themselves. Not so with scrub jays.
WE don’t see many of the scrub jays. We had one a couple of days ago.
We have lots of crows and mockingbirds.
Nothing has bothered the finches. I worry when the young get out of the nest because they are in the patio in the back. My DOGS live in the back yard.
Milo, our cat before KM, would catch birds in the trees in the front yard. I’m not sure how he caught them, but I would find either mockingbird or sparrow feathers on the front porch at least 3 times a week.
I’m not sure if the baby finches flew away or if they fell to the ground and were someone’s dinner. I don’t want to know!!
Neither do I! One of our jay babies didn't make it. I know at one time there were two in the nest. I don't even want to know what happened to him. :-(
Time for bed. Sweet dreams!
Well, not quite. LOL. More like floundering and fluttering and clinging to branches for dear life.
It seems like this happened so fast. All the best to SBJ on his first night out in the world.... well, probably just out in the lilac bush:)
LOL. Well, I sure hope he stays put in that bush. I wish he had stayed in the nest awhile longer. It isn't like he was being crowded out. He was the only baby! But, I know that they learn to fly by fluttering and everything is going according to nature's plan. I am sure he will be okay. I hope.
Good night, dita. Pleasant dreams.
Here are some straightforward instructions:

Bearded iris care - how to divide
For best growth, divide and replant bearded irises every three to four years, or you will get fewer flowers as the clumps get crowded. This is also the quickest and easiest way to propagate new plants.
Step-by-step division:
Dig around clump with a garden fork about 6 inches (15 cm) from rhizomes and ease plant out of ground. Work on one clump at a time to avoid getting colors mixed up.
Wash off soil; with sharp knife, divide rhizomes into single plants with one leaf fan. Discard old, soft or diseased rhizomes.
Cut leaves to 6 inches (15 cm) in height.
Dry for a day to allow cuts to dry and seal; if replanting in same spot, amend soil with compost or well-rotted manure and add couple of handfuls of alfalfa pellets.
Water well after planting, and continue to water a couple of times a week as the plants get re-established.

It’s been awhile since I did it, but it all comes back:)
Good night, Mama Bear and All.
We’re having another heat wave and it didn’t cool down much this evening.
It’s not like SBJ was being crowded out...LOL. As for the other baby, it often happens that hatchlings die, very common I think.
I remember, when I had a garden plot in a community garden, a mourning dove momma brought her babies to my garden for their first outing. She had nested in the next garden, but decided mine was better for her fledglings.
I’m sure Scrubita will establish boundaries for Sweet Baby Jay’s explorations:).
Thanks Amy, you certainly have a potpourri of beautiful things in your Place.
When I was a boy, our family would occasionally travel across Nevada. We loved the desert thunderstorms. Accompanied by lightning bolts and claps of thunder, huge sheets of rain would blanket the hot sand as far as the eye could see. The cooling water refreshed the earthand us.
Water produces marvelous changes in arid regions. For example, the pincushion cactus is completely dormant during the dry season. But after the first summer rains, cactuses burst into bloom, displaying delicate petals of pink, gold, and white.
Likewise, in the Holy Land after a rainstorm, dry ground can seemingly sprout vegetation overnight. Isaiah used rain's renewal to illustrate God's refreshing Word: "As the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, and do not return there, but water the earth, and make it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it" (Isa. 55:10-11).
Scripture carries spiritual vitality. That's why it doesn't return void. Wherever it encounters an open heart, it brings refreshment, nourishment, and new life.
