Juan Sabastián Elcano

No, this is not the yacht my SIL bought on our trip, this is the Spanish Naval training ship taking off for its seventh round the world trip in Jan 2008 and its 77th training cruise. The Juan Sabastian Elcano, is named after the first man to circumnavigate the earth in 1522. It was built in 1927 and was commissioned in 1928.

Of the 240 crew members who set out with Magellan, only 18 completed the circumnavigation of the globe and managed to return to Spain in 1522. They were led by Spaniard Juan Sebastian Elcano, who took over command of the expedition after Magellan's death.

The Presentation is 7megs so it takes about a minute to download. It has music, SALVE MARINERA, but the music takes a little while to start on the first slide.

Cardi, welcome back. I enjoyed the Powerpoint show and the song Salve Marinera. It would seem to be a national, even sacred, hymn that celebrates the Freedom of the Seas. It appears to be analogous to some of our patriotic songs such as God Bless America or our Marine Hymn, but can be, and is often, sung by pop stars like Diana Navarro. Do you have some background that might help us understand its significance in the Spanish culture?

The Salve Marinera was made from a few phrases extracted from a Zarzuela (Z is pronounced th,) in the early nineteenth century called The Miller of Subiza. This song became very popular and was taken up by the Spanish Navy and other sailors.

Zarzuela is a light opera form of music that originated in Spain, it differs from the opera in which zarzuela is sung in Spanish and includes the spoken word instead of the opera sung recitatives. As a matter of fact years ago, when I first received a recording and partitura of rthe zarzuela Doña Francisquita, my then, six year old daughter and I could sing almost all the first act in Spanish without knowing a single word of the language. The music is delightful.

This hymn was dedicated to Maria Del Carmen the Patrol Saint of all sailors. Each year in every Spanish town or village on the coast they have a huge celebration and they take anyone who can get aboard the fishing vessels for a short trip to toss flowers into the sea in memory of all those who have died at sea.

I took these photos in 2002, here in Sada, on the Dia de Maria del Carmen.

Thanks, Cardi, for a far better explanation than I could find online. (I'm still surprised that I was unaware of this celebration.) I did think a theme of Freedom of the Seas sounded overly large. A ceremony to honor Spain's braves souls who lost their lives to the seas based on the light opera seems more logical, given its popular resonance.

The Enduring Word

At Dublin Castle in Ireland is the Chester Beatty Library, named for an industrialist who gave generously to charity. The beautiful library includes a quaint coffee shop and a variety of exhibits.

The exhibit that grabbed my attention was the ancient manuscripts. I slowly walked through the area and viewed fragments of the New Testament Gospels dating back to the third century ad. The scrolls were among the oldest known biblical texts until the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in the mid-20th century. God's Word, preserved through the years!

As I looked at those portions of inspired text, I was moved by the permanence of the Word of God. It is because of the enduring nature of God's Word that we can have confidence in the message it contains. Jesus said, "Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away" (Mark 13:31). Later, Jesus' disciple Peter would write, "All flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of the grass. The grass withers, and its flower falls away, but the Word of the Lord endures forever" (1 Peter 1:24-25).

God's Word, enduring through the ages, is still the most trusted guide for living.

By inspiration it has been given—

Like a compass, the Bible always points you in the right direction.
