I buy paper towels and toilet tissue at Costco. Also Tide, Downey, olive oil and a few other staples. I mostly buy stuff that does not spoil. We do like their tri-tip steaks. I repackage them before freezing. Marissa and hubby both like them (and they are so easy!)

I am alarmed re rising food prices in the supermarkets and at Trader Joe’s too.... the price goes up on the same item every week!

Bananas $.79 per pound
Knudsen cottage cheese $5.49/quart(32 oz.); $2.99/pint
Best Foods Real Mayonnaise $5.99/quart
Mayo $3.42/pint (only they shaved off an ounce, it’s 15 oz.)
Iceberg lettuce/Romaine $1.89 ea. and up

And on and on... Even zucchini is expensive!!

I’m looking forward to our summer garden. I could live on tomato sandwiches. ;^ )

Marissa loves to help grampa; She will eat most of the garden veggies .... tomatoes, squash, corn. It may be too late to plant lettuce. She will not eat radishes and we don’t have a lot of luck with carrots.

I do not go to the supermarket every week but whenever I go, it seems that I spend a small fortune.

I know, dita. It's bad news out there and most of it all comes down to the rising gas prices. The consumer is going to pay at the pump and in the store. The trucking companies aren't going to be able to absorb the additional costs of getting the products to market....and why should they? We will need to raise our prices at our business in order to be able to make ends meet because the cost of living is going up and up. All other businesses are going to be raising their prices. Real estate is in a slump and interest rates will be rising.

And, of course, minimum wage in CA keeps going up and up, further fueling an inflationary cycle that I just don't see any end to. But then, if Hillary or Obama get elected we won't need to worry about a thing. They will fix it all. Uh huh.

I wish I was more optimistic, but the economic forecast is looking pretty gloomy out there. I hope I am wrong, but I think everyone is going to have to tighten their belts and hold on for bumpy ride the next couple years. I sure wish we had a stronger canditate on the Republican ticket that I could really get behind. Oh, well....... it is what it is. :-(

Lettuce likes cool weather; it might be too late now. Could depend on the variety, though.

I love tomato sandwiches also!! What a treat!!

That sounds logical, the increasing cost of transport. Groceries are a transport-intensive business.

I also saw on ABCNews tonight, which I rarely watch, that food prices are going up worldwide. And, get this, it is partly due to food now being used as fuel. In other words, grain is being used to make ethanol (?). As oil becomes unaffordable, the alternatives are being used... I guess.

Gas prices don’t seem to affect traffic around here, though.

We usually have a winter garden ..... lettuce, broccoli and cauliflower .... and of course, hubby plants some fava beans. Marissa and I do not eat them but he loves them.

We missed our winter garden last winter. :(

That's true here too. I was thinking yesterday as I was driving around town, there is more traffic than ever on the streets. Traffic jams everywhere!

Anyway, sorry to be so negative on Amy's upbeat, positive, fun thread. I just had a little lapse into some negative thinking about what we are up against right now. But, I'm fine now. God is in His heaven and all is well. :-)

Well .... I am trying to make fewer trips to FResno. Gas prices are going thru the roof here.

We should have filled the tank when we were at Costco today. Prices were listed at $3.56; on way home I noticed other prices of $3.77.

Also, I use American Express Costco credit card. I have a business card and you get a 5% rebate on all gas purchases. American Express Costco cards other than business cards get 3% cash back.

Helps a little even though it will be a year before you see the rebate check.

**We visited there a couple years ago.**

Eastern NC, right on the coast. If you look at a map, we’re the point that sticks out just below Hatteras and just above Wilmington. Y’all must travel a lot! I’m lucky if I get to Morehead, and it’s only about 20 miles away!

I’m a spring girl myself. I need the temp to stay about 75 and sunny year round! LOL
