I always thought Clive chose excellent songs for the idols. Will they dare to have Archuleta sing 3 syrupy ballads?
The AP says a source is confirming the story about Archuleta’s dad.

I feel so bad for the kid. :(
Cowell is the first to admit that ‘Idol’ has lost its zing

“American Idol” judge Simon Cowell is never one to hold back, even about his own series.
“Things are too old-fashioned at the moment,” said Cowell, reflecting on why the show’s ratings have taken a slight dip recently. (”Idol” airs 8 p.m. Tuesdays and 9 p.m. Wednesdays on Fox.)
Among the problems:
# The theme nights need to be “more current,” he says. While Neil Diamond and Andrew Lloyd Webber are legendary, they might not be the right fit for “Idol” to devote an entire evening to.
Of the recent Webber week in particular, in which contestants performed show tunes, he said: “I didn’t really see the point. We’re not looking for a Broadway singer.”

He seems to forget that several of their past contestants have gone on to successful Broadway careers. If they are specifically looking for the next Rap star or the next bubblegum star they will lose viewers faster than Michael Jackson lost his nose.
LOS ANGELES — Backstage meddling has caught up “American Idol” favorite David Archuleta’s dad, who’s been banned from rehearsals, a person working for the TV talent contest said Friday.
Jeff Archuleta was told this week by producers that he can no longer join 17-year-old son as David as he prepares for the show, the person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press. The person wasn’t authorized to comment publicly and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Simon's right on the money. Andrew Lloyd Weber is not what people are tuning in for. Especially not the young crowd. It's American Idol, not American Musical Star. Ish. If I want that, I'll go to a theater.
I don’t mind them doing it for 1 week, its not like they sing songs from muscials every week. I don’t want to listen to pop and rap. They have crap like Mariah Scarey and Leona screamer every week and they will lose tons of viewers. They already figure that Archuleta’s votes are coming from the 50+ and under 12 age brackets and he doesn’t even sing pop or anything contemporary!
I liked Andrew Lloyd Weber’s work much better before his Idol night.
In a real ALW stage production, it would’ve taken weeks to learn and craft each song.
They did a disservice to the Idols to expect them to do justice to that music in such a short time ~ wonder if ALW regrets having done it.
I think that people tune in to see the Chris Daughtrys, the Kelly Clarksons, the Carrie Underwoods (not Reuben - I - look - like - I - need - a- bib and - baby food - Stoddard).
And I think that’s why this season is boring. Is David A. going to be a top twenty seller? Syesha? No.
That makes for boredom. Simon may irritate some, but I agree with him most of the time.
I agree. It seemed to take ALW down a notch. Who’s his PR person. AI and ALW? Bad move.
Right and they don't all fall into the same category of music. For AI to appeal to the largest amount of people they have to remain diversified. As soon as they do away with certain types of music and limit it, their viewers will bail.
Those that put forth the effort did well with the musicals.
And I think that it has to be a latest hits type diversity. Country, R & B, Rock, Rap, Alternative, whatever, not Broadway. Fantasia was good at Broadway songs, but so what. (Deja Vu)
Like I say, one week of Broadway isn’t hurting anything. There have been a lot of them sucessful on Broadway. Fantasia being the least of them.
Overall, it cheapened ALW’s music.
It ended Carly and made ALW look foolish.
Carly’s screeching ended Carly. I thought Cook did excellent!
But what would really be super cool is for David Cook to play the first 4 bars of the song then slid the pick down the neck of the guitar grab the mike and say in his best Cockney Accent "Flack This!!" "Sod Off You Crazy Bollock'd Wanker!!" and then bust out with "Cat Scratch Fever" by Ted Nugent
I strongly disagree.
Carly’s song, out of context, seemed rakish and inappropriate and it did nothing to showcase either Carly or ALW.
I think the material itself ended Carly because viewers either disliked or misunderstood the musical.
ALW’s work just doesn’t fit AI’s abbreviated time frame or its audience, IMO.
I think Carly tried to really push her voice on the song and she went from controlled to out of control screaming in parts. She has a good voice but she was not ready to go power rocker that was needed there. Plus she should have stuck with her first song choice. JC-Superstar was not a good choice for her. ALW should have known better than to stereotype. Looking like a rock-chick because of the arm does not necessarily mean she is a rock-chick.
I agree ~ wrong song for her.
I don’t think any Idol could have done it justice in that time frame, out of context.
ALW’s music is too rich for the AI stage. Was just replaying Cook’s Music of the Night and agree with Simon ~ he did well with what he was given (but didn’t , couldn’t, really do it justice, IMO)
Paula Abdul chose for David A.- And So it Goes by Billy Joel
