Stating that there is nothing different or unique about Jesus, and implying that she slept with him, as she’s “had so many men before.”

That song is not exactly the best tune in the American theater, but that's an unfair characterization. The words of the second verse actually imply the opposite. She talks about how "yet, if he said he loved me, I'd be lost, I'd be frightened." The song as a whole talks about how the *only* way she knows how to relate to a man is sexually, but Jesus confuses and frightens her because her attraction to Him is something completely different, and she doesn't understand how she should approach Him. I've always found it a very sad song, about this poor wounded bird who is so messed up by her experiences that she doesn't understand how to love God.

Of course, there is nothing in the Bible to suggest that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute -- that was a corruption and a conflation of the text that talks about the people stoning a woman. So you could conceivably attack the authors of JC Superstar on that point. However, I am willing to give that to them since they are only following a centuries-old tradition of MM as a whore.

I had the Superstar album when I was a teen, and had large chunks of it committed to memory. Back then, I thought it was the coolest. As an adult, I can see the musical's many flaws, but I don't think blasphemy is one of them. The characters who sing bad things about Jesus are expressing their *character's* viewpoint, not the viewpoint of the musical as a whole.

You know, I didn’t mean to get going on that Superstar thing! :) What I wanted to say is that I was pretty startled by this evening’s outcome. My husband and I were arguing earlier over whether Brooke or Jason would be saying sayonara tonight. It never occurred to either of us that Syesha and Carly would be in the bottom two. Ah, well, I guess it’s good to be reminded that after all, AI is largely a popularity contest.

And what was up with Simon’s little protege? Why was she standing knock-kneed through most of the song? And who exactly are the people that actually spent money to hear that tripe? Good gravy!

I’m pulling for David Cook to do “Solitary Man.”

Hmmm...I’m not nearly as astute enough to claim Theology with any authority.

I guess I’ll have to say I have no idea that Paul and Jesus conflict with each other, and leave it at that!

Like I say, I’m nowheres a Theologian. I’m an apologist when friends and co-workers ask me about my beliefs, but...to hear someone say Paul and Jesus conflict, well...Paul talked about “putting on the perfect” from the imperfect, and his “old man” sin nature.

So I guess he could be wrong at times, but he did say that some things he wrote were his own opinion, whereas other things he was told by God what to see.

I loved that album as a kid, and I could probably sing every song on it verbatim if I thought about it a moment or two!

I loved Yvonne Elliman’s singing, and throughout my teenage years I would play the song “Everything’s All Right” that she sings to Jesus, where Judas interrupts and starts singing about “Hey, hey woman, your fine ointments, brand new and expensive, should have been saved for the poor,” setting up JCSS’s myth that Judas betrayed Jesus for purposes of bringing about the Messiah’s conquering of the Roman authorities, when the Bible clearly teaches that Judas was a thief from the beginning.

Jesus Christ, Superstar and Hair are two of the albums that I could probably sing most of the songs to, right now....strange, what is left over from childhood, huh!

Oh...and the 4th Movement of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, the Ode to Joy!

Ed

Also in the intro video David Cook says he found Chris Connelly's version on Itunes. He never said it was his arrangement. People who are saying he took credit for the song are just insanely jealous that DC is blowing the doors off the rest of the competition. David Cook comes into the show well rehearsed, very confident, he knows his craft, comfortable with his own performance, and IS IN IT TO WIN IT. He goes out there each night showing that he is there to become the next American Idol and not there to be just another runner up who just hopes they did enough to get by to the next week like so many others in this contest.

From some of the comments on this board alone David Cook could come out raise his hand say "Hi" to address the audience and their reaction would be "How dare he say "Hi". What arrogance! Who does he think he is by addressing the audience."

She'd just be another winner with less than stellar sales! :)

I was thinking tonight that Kelly Clarkson set the bar really, really high for subsequent winners. Each winner is just the winner of a single contest against a set of specific competitors. Who's to say that Fantasia would have even made the Top 12 if she had competed in Season 5 or that Carrie would have won if she had competed against Kelly in Season 1? The PTB probably hope and pray for a truly marketable (as in marketable to the largest possible audience) winner, but it doesn't always work out that way.

That made me think of that baby girl born in India with two faces and people worship her like a goddess.

Man, there are some weird things that come out of India. What goes on there anyway????

YES. That's the one that keeps sticking in my mind for him to do as well. Not sure why, but it does. Glad someone else thinks so, too. :)

I agree. I'm sick of the focus on Cook and the "arrangements" he "borrows" when the Monchichi sings Stevie Wonder arrangements and no one says "boo!". No one say's "boo" when the other performers ape the originals (Carly's Heart, for instance). Bottom line is that FOX makes sure the copyright owners get their license fees when these songs get performed on the show. People don't get that a lot of these no-name little bands, whose "version" Cook borrows, don't have a leg to stand on because they probably didn't pay any fees to the copyright owners to profit off the song in the first place. FOX isn't paying them for a reason. I hope they all get sued back into oblivion. You don't get to copyright an arrangement of a song you didn't license in the first place - you can copyright your *recording* of it, but FOX isn't piping the original performances through the speakers now are they? Live band, hello! Point is, it is a stupid debate argued out of ignorance. Yeah, Cook is arrogant, but who cares. He's had the stones and smarts to get this far in the competition and, win or lose, he's going to put out a great album. I'm going to buy it.

In my opinion, Fantasia never should have won. One decent song (Summertime) doe NOT a star make. Her subsequent sales have proven that! They've had two winners (Kelly and Carrie) that have gone to be stars in their own right. I raelly thuink that LaToya or Jennifer Hudson were much bettr than Mantasia.

I didn't watch the the first two seasons, but from 3, 4, 5, and 6 I would say that last year, season 6 was the weakest, especially considering the eventual winner.

Next week should be a good one..Neil Diamond..so I propose a fun little contest for my FRiends on the AI thread..with only 5 contestants left..let's see if anyone can guess who sings which song next week... Here's my take...

Cook should do "Cracklin' Rosie"

He's got the voice for it..possible alternative is "I am ..I said" either would work well for him

Brooke - "Sweet Caroline"..

She can own this..she has a smokey voice..

Dreds.."Song Sung Blue"

He'll have to be careful to avoid sounding like Tiny Tim..but he could pull it off..

Archuleta.."Play Me"..Monchici could really shine on this..give it his own take..could be quite special..

Syesha..I'm having a problem here, and so might she..she has the big voice, but in a higher range..obviously the opposite of Diamond..so she might try to change it up to a ballad..either "Play Me" or ""Stones"

Cook should be the big winner here.

The bible also says that all scripture is “God breathed” or the inspiration of God. Not some scripture but all scripture. The writers were given the gift of the Holy Spirit which guided their writings. (Paul’s included)

I agree season 6 was the weakest. I can’t even remember who was in the season much and most nights I wasn’t bothered if I missed it.

I think Dreds doing Song Song Blue is a good guess. He seems to like to attempt the 'whimsical'.

I don't know what era or decade their choices will need to come from.

Cook likes songs that are either 'haunting' or can be made into 'haunting' versions. He might be able to do something from Jonathon Livingston Seagull, like Lonely Looking Sky. There's really a lot of songs he could do and do well. Course, he did do a slow song this past week so he might choose and be better off rocking something out, like America or Surviving The Life.

Syesha coul probably do You Don't Bring Me Flowers. I know it was a duet but, duets have been changed to fit a single before.

Maybe Brooke could try I've Been This Way Before

Archuleta, hmmm, how about Brooklyn Roads?

It rally was a terrible year. Looking back, Melinda Doolittle should have won. It's funny. AI keeps trying to breath life into Sparks career, yet they couldn't bad mouth Hicks enough to ruin his. Go figure! lol

So, when Paul tells us that the Law has passed away and Jesus tells us that the Law will NEVER pass away, who do we listen to?

Good ideas.."America" for Cook could be a winner also..and I can easily see Brooke doing your choice..

Very scary that we BOTH concur on what Dreds will do..(g)
