Are you sure it wasn’t Harry Harrison or Douglas Adams?

Voyager's Golden Record This is life on earth 1977 as it will appear when Voyager 1 meets life (ETA 40.000 years from now)... and finds a turntable. Pioneers 10 and 11, which preceded Voyager, both carried small metal plaques identifying their time and place of origin for the benefit of any other spacefarers that might find them in the distant future. With this example before them, NASA placed a more ambitious message aboard Voyager 1 and 2-a kind of time capsule, intended to communicate a story of our world to extraterrestrials. The Voyager message is carried by a
phonograph record-a 12-inch gold-plated copper disk containing
sounds and images selected to portray the
diversity of
life and
culture on
Earth.
Hello, ET!

You think after seeing Gilligans Island or some other old shows ... theyd already be here! Hey, if I were an ET type, I'd be here in a heart beat for this...

1977...
Heck if there’s any Emerson, Lake and Palmer on the LP, then aliens will feel right at home with the Moog’s futuristic sound.

Beam some of Air Supply's stuff out there.
Those aliens won't come near us.

If we don’t find somehting a lot better than the Beatles — they’re going to send mothership full of nukes.

Problem is, that could easily be interpreted as a hostile gesture by whoever’s on the receiving end of that signal... I think we should just ‘accidentally’ let our ‘reality’ TV shows reach them, and then any intelligent life would think that we’re about to kill ourselves off anyways, and therefore are not worth the time and energy so interfere with one way or the other. Sort of like Britney Spears...
