Yeah, she really did have a nice voice.

There were so many people last year who had good voices that the judges just passed on.

I rooted for taylor Hicks from the moment he sang that bluesy, Ray Charles voice!

I appreciate the fact that this season Simon wants us to get to know the idols better, yet I agree that the fingernail collection was a bit TMI! And I have to say, the kid on the tractor is my favorite!

Definitely the fingernail thing was gross, but he was a decent singer and might make top 24...we will see. The tractor guy was very good and seems like a nice family...praying before the meal...what a concept. I was shocked at how good the campaign guy sang. He was pretty good. The last blond girl to sing is going to be American Idol if Simon has anything to say about it. lol.

Nah—I just think dad keeps him on an extremely tight leash

Until he gets that first taste of freedom and then he will go down hill quick. I think parents make a huge mistake when they shelter their children that much. Plus I am sorry but that is disturbing that the kid wears the key and the dad wears the heart...Yieks!! I have three boys and could not imagine a weirder thing to do. Do you really find this normal?????

It would be worse if his mother were wearing it! I think its supposed to act as a constant reminder. Might not do much good tucked away somewhere, 'Out of sight, out of mind'.

I always wanted to tell you this, but I never had the words, until I watched AI last night,

You are my brother. Best friends forever!!!!

LOL!

You're not wearing a big white hat with my name on it, are you? ;)

I did find the "19 and never been kissed" guy a little disturbing. His dad wearing the heart was really odd. When a girl wears a "True Love Waits" ring, I've never known their parents to wear a matching ring or anything.

We consider ourselves pretty conservative Christians and brought our girls up in the church, yet no topic has been off limits for discussion at an age appropriate level. We have some friends dealing with their very sheltered daughter sneeking internet access at a neighbors, making a myspace page and meeting a 17 yr old boy (she's 14).

I do hope that young man is the exception to the "over sheltered, go crazy with freedom" rule tho.

Is ‘Idol’ lying to us all?

At least two “American Idol” contestants this season have established recording backgrounds.

Kristy Lee Cook, the contender played up Tuesday for selling a horse to get to the audition, was once signed to a label and Spears’ production company and BMI. Carly Hennessy, who will be seen soon, was once the subject of a huge Wall Street Journal story because of all the money MCA put into her 2002 album “Ultimate High” which ultimately sold less than 500 copies.

“I think it ruins the show,” Maura Johnston, editor of the blog Idolator, told abc.news. “I think it’s treading too closely to the line that they’re trying to fool the viewer into thinking these people have real back stories and are totally new to the business.”

Johnston guessed that “Idol” makers might be reacting to the flat sales of show winners and are “trying to go for the kind of people…who have been seen as having star potential by other executives. It’s not a sure thing, but it’s a little bit more of a sure thing.”

But New York Magazine says, “So what?”

“We’re not worried. In fact, much of the fun of American Idol comes from seeing bland, entitled semi-pros get put in their place by the tone-deaf Sanjayas of the world. Remember Melinda Doolittle, last season’s annoying, falsely modest (though hugely talented) professional backup singer? She’d recorded with Kirk Franklin, Michael McDonald, and Aaron Neville, then she came on Idol and lost to Blake Lewis. No matter how unfair it may seem to have pros in an amateur competition, we can all be sure that, in the end, America’s bad taste will prevail. “

The lure for the audience of AI is the quest of the contestent's ability to make themselves popular with fans, not whether they are the "best" singer. So it doesn't matter about these former talents who have professionally recorded, they are on equal footing.

America is going to choose who it likes best as an Idol, not a singer. Why do you think Sanjaya went so far last year, because 13 yr. olds pervaded the vote. The only question is does AI really skew the voting?

Let my peoooooople gooooooooooooo...

I don't know how official these stats are, but according to the folks at darwincentral.org, our two Idol threads last year ranked in the Top 10 Most Popular FR Threads of 2007 ("at least, regarding the number of replies"):

1. Anna Nicole Smith has died according to ABC News

2. Anna Nicole Smith, The Investigation Posted

3. Will FR embrace socialism ...

4. Anna Nicole Smith, The Investigation #3

5. The OFFICIAL weekly "24" Season 6 Live thread!

6. 'The Nativity Story' Movie Problematic for Catholics, "Unsuitable" for Young Children

7. American Idol 2007--Live Thread (Part II)

8. Will the Pope's Pronouncement Set Ecumenism Back a Hundred Years?

9. American Idol 2007--Live Thread (Part I)

10. The Hobbit Hole XXXIV

From the link: "Two threads were filed in the forum "religion", another two stashed in the "backroom", leaving five threads in the category "chat". "

LOL ;)

More stats here.

Thanks to GraniteStateConservative for the ping.

That’s pretty good considering how last season completely blew.

That is all well & good jonny, but you do realize that DC’s purpose of posting those “stats” are to slam FR?

Don’t let them fool you.

That’s amazing—we were in the Top Ten!

We’ll all have to work harder and post more this season...and give jonny a giant headache in the process!

Don’t let them fool you, either. They come here to enjoy the laughs and camaraderie—something they’ll never find on Daily Kos.

I think if Idol's season were longer the Idol threads would have beaten the Smith threads.
