Vanity: "The Last Supper" in real life: Image of a face in St. Bartholomew's robe????

Posted on 10/28/2007 10:42:46 AM PDT by RooRoobird20

Hubby and I just had the privilege of viewing Da Vinci's "The Last Supper" in the Basilica of S. Mariua Delle Gazie (Milan, Italy). Even the best photographs of this masterpiece don't capture all the details.

Question: There appears to be the image of a face in the folds of St. Barthomew's robe, to the lower left of his hand. He is the leftmost figure in the painting.

St. Bartholmew was skinned alived and crucified upside down in the 8th century. The image in Da Vinci's painting is similar to St. Bartholomew as painted by Michelangelo in "The Last Judgement"--the skin of St. Bartholomew's face appears next to his figure.

Has anyone out there seen "The Last Supper" in person and observed the same thing? I can't find ANYTHING written on this anywhere and am "googled" out. I don't think hubby and I are "seeing Elvis" in half-melted refrigerator ice (LOL).

I would appreciate anyone's feedback on this.

Converted Catholic dittoes!!!

I think you are making something out of nothing. It is green, so is the man’s robe, it is wrinkles in the robe. Isn’t that his leg and foot below what you are calling a face?

I believe that it’s already been established that St. Peter was actually a bunny rabbit from detailed examination of the painting...

No, actually it comes from the prophets Matt and Trey of South Park, where they disclosed the origin of “The Easter Bunny.”

The hand holding the knife looks somewhat disembodied. However, the general consensus is that Peter is holding the knife. The order of the apostles from left to right is (in Italian, because that’s what’s in my guide book—LOL):

On left side of Jesus:

—Bartholomew
—Giacomo Minore (James the younger)
—Andrea (Andrew)
—Guida (Judas)
—Pietro (Peter)
—Giovanni (John—NO, it’s not Mary Magdalene!!!)

On right side of Jesus:

—Tommasso (Thomas)
—Giacomo Maggiore (James the elder)
—Filippo (Phillip)
—Matteo (Matthew)
—Jude
—Thaddeus

Michelangelo is said to have portrayed himself as a flayed skin

“Saint Bartholomew holding the knife of his martyrdom and his flayed skin. The face of the skin is Michelangelo’s.”

another, larger pic, although (and my not having seen the original) both seem to be from before conservation work to the fresco:

Thanks for the info.

BTW, St. Bartholomew is the patron saint of skinners/tanners. Not making this up.

It started out as “help it harm us”, which was supposed to resemble “epidermis”, and be funny. Wasn’t though. So I thought, hey, Latin would obfusticate this and almost make it all worthwhile. ;’)

And when I stare at a randomly-patterned shag carpet or at wood grain in a board, I find I can see all sorts of things. It works with clouds, too! Imagine that.
