Thank you - I just keep praying the same. Yes, I have a gun, but won’t use it. I don’t give out my address and the phone is unlisted, so anyone who knocks or rings the doorbell is a stranger, unless I made some arrangements for someone to come - and I *don’t* unless it’s a package delivery or emergency maintenance.
I don’t have a “porch” so I don’t have a “porch light” so I can’t see who it is thru the peephole. I’ve lived here 4 years, so it’s not someone looking for a previous resident. It happened two weekend nights during the holidays, but just a doorbell ringing, then they left.
This time, he beat on the door and beat on the door and beat on the door 6-7 times. I tried to be really quiet but he didn’t stop, so I went to the door (5 feet away from me on the sofa) and said “who is it” but my voice is very weak because I can’t breathe.
I repeated it several times and he seemed to hear me and said “It’s Chris with the project” - I assumed he meant the apartment project, but I hadn’t called anyone and it’s well after dark! I asked “what do you want” - he kept saying “open the door, I can’t talk to you thru the door”.
Well, I wasn’t about to say “no, I won’t open the door” because that translates, “I’m a sick woman who lives here alone.” That would be an open invitation to him to break in and rob me or worse.
Then he just started cussing and apparently left (I couldn’t see anyone thru the peephole anymore, after I picked myself up off the floor from clutching my chest where it hurt and stopped crying).
I called the apt’s office and left word that I’d call in the morning, but reported what the guy said - his name and that he was with the “project.” I’ll call them tomorrow and find out if there is such a person. Pretty sure there isn’t. But, they’re not good at wanting to protect me at all (the handyman once said he’d come sometime one afternoon and I said I sleep in the daytime and need to know when and he said “no problema” he’d just let himself in!) - that’s what it’s like.
Ugh - enough for now.
