Madonna, the Beastie Boys, the Dave Clark Five, Leonard Cohen, Afrika Bambaataa, John Mellencamp, the Ventures, Donna Summer and Chic have been nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next year. Five acts will make it into the Hall of Fame in 2008.

We agree that rock and roll history is false.
And can I get a witness that conventional books got it wrong about movies, comics, jazz, politics, and history itself for decades?
It isn’t a new phenomenon. I read a short stroy about a mummy, it was attributed to Edgar Allan Poe. Seems that the Egyptians froze these people in time to set the historical record straigth thouasads of years later when they were revived.
As to the rock hall, there is an ideological and publishing reason for putting some acts in the hall as well as keeping others out of the hall.
It is not surprising that the Stooges got rejected. It was surprising that the Velvet Underground got in while the members were still alive. Both bands were disliked by Jann’s Rolling Stone.
There is an early edition of Rolling Stone Album Reviews (not the full title). It gave 1 star reviews to the Police, AC/DC and other bands while gushing over Carly Simon and James Taylor.
Look at the bands from Britney to NKOTB on the cover of Rolling Stoned. Much of the content now is political They know less about music than they know about politics and that speaks volumes.
As a last comment, ever notice how any “500 best” list in RS is weighted with a bunch of latest-greatest releases that don’t deserve to be there?
And how can you have a “best” list of albums when albums didn’t really exist as a static concept until 1965? Before that the market was single driven. If you lasted a long time you got an album of your singles with some other cuts to pad it out.
Red Hot Chili Peppers predate Beatie Boys. So do U2.
There are big bands that may be “unavailable”.
It would seem to be political.
And the old artists die before they get their recognition.
I missed Dick Dale this last time. I saw him when his son was 2 years old and holding a steady beat on the drums.
Now he tracks along with dad on a guitar (he’s in his early teens) and they play like Les Paul LIVE.
They were so basic (in a great way) R & R, its hard to compare them to Donna Summer?
If there were no Beatles, there would still be the DC5.
Right Said Fred: “I’m too sexy for this thread!”... heehee!
quote: Dick Dale is quite a character. He tends to speak of himself in the third person as in (him speaking here) Dick Dale invented surf!. Hes the king and he knows it.
Saw him a year or two ago and was amazed by the energy of his playing, although he says he uses lighter strings these days so he doesn’t melt picks as much and his sound isn’t as powerful. Couldn’t tell by me. I had earplugs in and it still sounded loud.
Chic?!
From the best I can tell, RHCP’s first record was not out until after the cut off.
Other than how hard they suck I’m not sure why U2 isn’t at least on the ballot.
lol
Where in NH do you live? I have a sister in Litchfield, a brother in Bedford and my mother in Merrimack...
I had such a crush on Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden as a teeanger growing up in the early 80’s... I even had the big hair and dog collars to prove it...
I've seen Coop live many times. He's absolutely phenomenal (and his being a Christian Conservative only sweetens the pot, you know?)

I’m a huge Eddie Money fan. Laugh if you must, but he belongs in the hall of fame. Baby Hold On, Two Tickets To Paradise came out right about the time Donna Summer and Disco were ruling the airwaves. How the heck can donna summer be nominated and not the Moneyman?
I like “Shakin’”... and his duet with Ronnie Spector in 1986...
Run DMC should’ve been nominated before the Beastie Boys, though... although DMC is exclusively rap, and the Beasties are more of a rap-hard rock genre an dplay their own instruments, the fact that Grandmaster Flash was inducted last year is proof enough that if they are going to open up the nominating process to rap groups, then Run DMC should’ve been inducted as well.
Hope ya enjoyed the pic ... it was taken last year right around this time (Halloween) at Roseland Ballroom in NYC, where The Coop put on one magnificent show to a nightclub audience, what could be better than that? /smiles
More photos from Coop's show at Roseland

God Bless him! The irony being that Alice initially came across as being America's worst parents nightmare when in fact he was just mocking all the collective neurosis of the 60's liberal excesses, illustrating the absurd by being absurd and outrageous. Frank Zappa did the same, and not coincidentally signed the Alice Cooper Group to their first record contract on Zappa's label; "Bizzare"
As said on Coop's website: "Alice Cooper drove a stake thru the heart of the Love Generation".
Alice Cooper is an inspiration, a one-of-a-kind
I plan on making a Lite-Brite jacket for their tour coming up next year. I don’t know if I’ll be able to bring it overseas, but I’ll absolutely wear it here for their American shows.
That’s really pretty, Hildy.
