Here we are now in the third exciting week of college football action. Before I begin, if you didnt get the chance to watch the end of last Saturdays Auburn/South Florida game, you missed what might have been the best game of the year so far. So it made me wonder: is South Florida now the second best team in the State of Florida? Understandably, Ill catch hell from various Seminoles and Hurricanes, but I do think its worth asking.
At any rate, who wants to take a look-see at the marquee match-ups of the weekend? You do, of course!
#4 West Virginia plays Maryland, Tonight 7:30 pm Eastern. The Terps look to protect this house--my apologies for referring to an old Under Armor commercial.
#5 ranked and reigning National Champions of the World Florida take on #22 Tennessee (Saturday 3:30 pm Eastern). This is always an entertaining game, particularly since I like Urban Meyerfor obvious reasons.
Notre Dame plays Michigan. (3:30 Eastern) Sure it may be playing in the pillow fight sense hey that reminds me. I was watching ESPN Classic and they re-aired the 1993 Notre Dame/Boston College game. Youll remember that Notre Dame was ranked #1 going in, but they could not stop Glenn Foley and the Eagles and BC ends up winning that game on a last second field goal. Ive had a theory for many years that Notre Dame hasnt been the same since that game. Had Notre Dame held on to win that game, they probably win the national title that year. Many will point to other events in the recent past for the Irish, but Im going to hold to my theory that this game was their jumping of the shark moment.
Washington takes on #10 Ohio State (3:30 Eastern) As good of a test as Boise State was supposed to be for the Huskies, this one will be even tougher. This might be the national coming out party for Husky QB Jake Locker.
For a few of our specific fellow college football FReepers we have:
Texas Tech and Rice (3:00 Eastern) for WhyisaTexasGirlinPA (and husband)
For Biggirl and Man50D UConn takes on Temple (Noon Eastern)
But all of these games are the undercards. This weekends main event is
#1 USC takes on #14 Nebraska in Lincoln (8:00 PM Eastern). Ive got to think that SC has the edge here and that the Trojans have too much talent for the Huskers right now. Well hear from the Trojans on the thread, but how about you Husker fans? How do you see this one playing out?
Enjoy your game this weekend wherever it may be.
I went over to logoserver.com. Their site was almost exclusively for pro sports until about a year or so ago.
I wonder what would happen if this were UGA and Michael Vick had a few bucks on the outcome?
Eh, I figured since we had an Ok St fan comment on the previous ping to the list I figured I'd post a pic I hadn't used yet, since I'm trying to not post the same pic twice with this thread.
If anyone does have a pic that they would like immortalized when I do the pinging, send me a FReepmail and I'll fit it in. Thanks.
I didn't even get to see very much of the UGA game against S Carolina last week. From the Bulldog perspective, I take it I didn't miss much?
You are quite welcome! I just now realized that TTU will have played at SMU and Rice. Is this like a Red Raider Texas Barnstorming Tour of 2007? Seemed very strange to me that they’d schedule two games on the road like that unless it’s for the TTU fans and alums in Dallas and Houston.
I had to miss most of the game. They reran it later in the week in the wee hours of the morning. I didn’t bother to watch or tape it then either.
The good opponents are still ahead on the schedule. Too bad they didn’t schedule Notre Dame or Michigan this year.
I never understand how/why they schedule certain non-conf games. It’s way too far for the students to travel from Lubbock to Houston - 525 miles, which takes about 9 hours so the game would almost have to be for the locals and the Rice fans.
I spent a lot of time in that stadium back when Rashaun Woods, Tatum Bell, Derent Williams, and Josh Fields were there. That picture is taken from the side I always sat on too. It looks a bit different now. I can’t wait till they complete the west end.
I don't see why not? A program like Michigan is allowed to have one bad year...Lloyd Carr is a different story, but the program itself, sure. :)
I just did directions on Google Earth and they estimate 10 hrs 19 minutes from Lubbock to Rice Stadium in Houston. It takes about 10 hrs (if I speed) to get from where I live (Boise, ID) to Las Vegas. That’s just about ridiculous.
Yes that would be about right, without traffic...lol We live 9 hours from our door to our daughter’s apartment in Lubbock - and we make the drive several times each year. Most of it is open road, not a tree in sight even, but San Antonio can be a bit of a bear to drive through.
It looks like there’s been a lot of construction going on in Stillwater though. IIRC, I posted an article about OSU getting a ton of money poured into the Athletic Dept. from Boone Pickens himself if memory serves.
You mentioned Woods, Tatum Bell, Darrent Williams, etc...I was going to ask if you were around in the days of Barry Sanders, Thurman Thomas, and Hart Lee Dykes, but I take it that would be a no?
Oh, that can be arranged
Florida State goes to the People's Republic of Boulder to take on Colorado (10:00 pm Eastern). Now, Colorado didn't play well last week against Arizona State, but both teams are going to be hungry for a Dubya. What's amazing to me is that two years ago CU's current QB Cody Hawkins was playing high school ball here in Boise (at Bishop Kelly High). He seemed a little too small at the time to be playing big time college football, but I think it's safe to say he's grown up...a little. How come I couldn't have a growth spurt at 18 like that one?
I'll actually be in Salt Lake this weekend watching my beloved Utah Utes probably lose to #11 UCLA, so I'll have to check out the full report on Sunday evening. :)
As a sidenote, one thing I recommend people do whenever they go to games is take pictures. Home game, away game, bowl game, doesn't matter. I got into a habit of doing that for all of the games I attend in person.
Daaaamn, Fulmer has man boobs! :]
Unless youre a Trojan, you probably hope some NFL team dangles a monstrous enough carrot (Brinks truck full of cash, team ownership, full control whatever) that finally lures away the King of L.A. because if Pete Carroll stays at Southern California for much longer, the annual race to the BCS championship game is going to become a yearly chase to see who gets to play SC.
