Lackluster Britney Spears kicks off MTV awards

[ Please note, I'm posting this as a commentary on our increasingly decadent culture and the either impossible or undesirable goals it sets for our young women. ]

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (AP) -- Somewhere, Kevin Federline is laughing. An out-of-shape, out-of-touch Britney Spears delivered what was destined to be the most talked-about performance of the MTV Video Music Awards -- but for all the wrong reasons....

She walked through her dance moves with little enthusiasm. It appeared she had forgotten the entire art of lip-synching. And, perhaps most unforgivable given her once-taut frame, she looked embarrassingly out of shape....

I dunno, folks. The shape looks okay. Most of the women I know would KILL to have this shape after delivering two kids in the past few years. Our stupid culture is setting the bar on "good looks" so damn high that no real woman can top it. Far as I'm concerned, Britney Spears has a LOT of problems, but how her body looks is not one of them.

But.... what's she doing in her underwear???? THAT ought to be the issue. God forbid my daughter appeared in public dressed like that. Luckily I don't think that'll ever be a worry for her, but still...

I am annoyed that the above is considered in good taste for public view. Not her body shape, her choice of outfit.

She needs to grow into her role of being a woman and now a parent. She needs to dress accordingly.

I don’t think she’s in shape to do that act. But she is in fine shape to be a human female.

In good taste for public view? Didn’t you mean “pubic view”? With Britney, Lindsey, Paris, etc., one should generally refer to the pubic view.

One problem is much of our entertainment and fashion industry is gay men. Who view androgynous shapes as sexier. Which imo is anti-fertility. Women dont’ want to allegedly wreck their figure by having more children.

In some ancient cultures a pregnant woman was viewed as a sex symbol of fertility.

I agree about that underwear.. I saw a video of Britney on youtube and she was in sweat pants, and a wool hat and t-shirt.. and imo she looked great. I was like wow I didn’t realize she was that good looking. Somehow the way they dress her and do her up seems to take away from her natural sexiness to me.

Yes, precisely!

I missed the act itself, so I can't say about your first comment, but I'll agree with your latter assessment.

When I was a kid, "I can see your underwear!" was a taunt that could make a girl break down and cry. Now.... oh, don't get me started...

I agree 110%!! As a healthy heterosexual male I look at so many of the “Twiggy” females in fashion magazines and wonder what is the appeal?? Even if it were not terribly unhealthy for these girls and women, reason enough to put a stop to it of course, it’s also completely unappealing to most semi-’normal’ males..... The skin-and-bones androgynous look certainly doesn’t appeal to me! Then I read and hear about the extent to which gay males dominate the sensibility of a large portion of the fashion industry and it all fits — they want stick-like women who look like teenage boys!

MTV's a joke.

It wasn't too bad when it was new:  music videos and  Liquid Television with Aeon Flux and Beavis and Butthead, et al.

But now it just sucks.  It's completely unwatchable.

I saw a video clip of Britney’s “peformance”. She looked stoned out of her mind.

I think her weight gain is only important because of what it tells us about the whole basis of her career. I don't think she's ever had more than two molecules of talent, yet people are slamming this performance like it's something new. God knows she's never been able to sing worth beans (everything she's ever done has been created in a studio and lip-synched to in "live" performances) so this was no different. People are talking about her lackluster dancing, but aside from the sloppiness and low energy, it was really no clunkier than her usual dancing (I saw her several years ago on Letterman, and remarked on how her choreography was nothing but a series of drill team style chucks, each one easy to spot because of the way she'd turn, stalk back to her tape mark, plant her feet, then launch into the next one. Fred Astaire must've been spinning nimbly in his grave at the claim that this was "dancing.")

So I contend that what she did on the VMAs was really no more incompetent than anything she's ever done before, except then she was doing it with a slender body, tight abs and a much firmer butt. That just kept most people from noticing how talent-deficient she really is. Take away the hot looks, and there's very little left.

For God's sake, they were in Vegas: they could have hired any one of 25 Britney impersonators or 5,000 strippers, and any of them could have done that routine better. After all, they do exactly the same thing for a living that Britney does: dance around with their clothes off to a prerecorded Britney Spears track.

Agreed. When I was younger, an undressed or under-dressed female was something rare and highly desirable. Now, I find this sort of tawdry display something between tasteless and boring.

If they're going to dress "sexy", I think a really pretty outfit does wonders that a bra and panties can't touch. A bikini is nice, but inappropriate to a dance number. Lingerie belongs in the bedroom, not on the performance stage.

 "Isn't she pretty?"

"I don't know.  I'm not attracted to boys."

Kid Rock punched Tommy Lee in the mouth at his table because Lee was heckling Pam when she was trying to do an intro for Kanye West.

Timberlake yells into the mic that MTV needs to stop airing reality programs and start playing music videos.

Duh..we have only been saying that for 20 yrs dipshit.

“An out-of-shape, out-of-touch Britney Spears”

Out of shape? What kind of crack is the author smoking? Does he mean she isn’t a twig, but actually looks like a woman? No s**t sherlock... she isn’t 18 anymore.

She popped out 2 rugrats in the last few years and looks better than most women who have never given birth.

Excellent points. What she does is physically demanding, and I'm willing to give her credit for stamina, but it's a stretch to call it "dancing" except as the term has been redefined by music videos in general.
