Pony mauled by pit bulls in Pierce County

TACOMA, Wash. -- Margaret Wingerter is amazed her Shetland pony is still alive after having its face chewed off by pit bulls.

The veterinarian needed to use nearly 300 stitches to repair the injuries.

"His face was just hanging off," Margaret said. "Both sides were literally just hanging open, gaping open."

Over the weekend, two dogs attacked the pony in the middle of the night. Neighbors rushed in with pool cues and beat the dogs away, but not before the damage was done.

Margaret was keenly aware of what happened to Sue Gorman, a Gig Resident, last week when two pit bulls entered her home and severely mauled her.

"You read about someone else like the lady that got attacked and it was like horrific, and you just it makes you sick," she said.

The dogs that attacked Gorman were captured and will likely be destroyed, but the two that attacked Margaret's pony disappeared into the neighborhood along the Puyallup River Road.

"The dogs were soaked with blood dripping off of them from the attack," said Jack Wingerter. "So those dogs went home to some parents or some family and they know something happened. But whether they come forward or not, we don't know."

The couple has grandchildren that are always around and say they now fear for their safety.

The Wingerters say the owners may believe these dogs to be harmless, but now that the pit bulls have attacked they need to be considered extremely dangerous.

The Pierce County Sheriff's Department is investigation.

Buy twelve gage shot gun and boxes of buckshot, When dog crosses your property line kill it.
I’m a pit supporter, but I agree with that recommendation. If the dog’s in your yard it means the owner is one of the bad pit owners who doesn’t know or care what they’re doing. Shoot to kill.

Yep.

‘Actually, I wouldn’t shed a tear if all the pit bulls in this country were hunted down. ‘

You have a bad case of media driven paranoia then.

‘Ah right. Pits don’t kill people, black labs do.’

I own a rather squirrely black lab mix, 84 pounds. She routinely decides a visitor to our home is in fact the ‘Antichrist’.

Its a concern. She gets ‘over it’ quickly...but still.

On the other hand, my Rottweiller/G Shepard mix loves everybody, thinks they come by to visit her. Til you place a hand on anyone in our family, then she lets the offender know that doesn’t make her happy....(chuckle)

Its not the breed, in short. Don’t make the mistake of buying into the media driven nonsense about pit bulls. A large number of so called ‘pit bull attacks’ don’t involve pit bulls.

Its very similiar to an anti gun reporter misidentifying a semi automatic pistol as a ‘full auto gun’.

Which is why I asked (see post# 77), what is a Pit Bull? The AmStaff looks a lot like the Pits I’ve seen (or so I thought). Is “Pit Bull” the actual breed name, or is there another, mor “official” name for the breed?

Outrageous what slander is being leveled at such cuddly, cute family pets.

Can we PLEASE just round them up, put them in a pit, and bury them all now?

That’s exactly what I was thinking. Could have been just about any breed of dog. Dogs are domesticated wolves. If you let them run loose in a pack, they will sometimes stalk and kill prey.

If a dog owner does his or her job, the dog sees his human family as a pack, and he is at the bottom of the roster. When dogs run in packs often the "wildest" one becomes the alpha...and that leads to trouble.

Its rather arbitrary how the American Kennel Club ‘names’ the various breeds and offshoots. It literally comes down to ‘who you talk to’.

My wife is involved in dog rescue operations, mostly financial support, but also is a member of the local humane society here (just named to the board actually). One of her biggest ongoing complaints is about the AKC’s wobbly standards and decries along these lines.

Sure, lets.

A human with no personal knowledge of a topic that expresses a weird paranoia about the topic is called....?

Really?!?!? That's surprising. In any case, I've know two American Staffordshires, and both were great dogs (both owned by friends). Just wondering if these were considered Pit Bulls, as they certainly looked the part.

Ok- maybe you’re right. It coulda been a pack of those vicious weenie dogs. They’re known to viciously rip faces off every chance they get. Or...or...it was a gang of poodles DISGUISED as pitt bulls, cause it’s a conspiracy!

So you're saying it's simply not possible that these people got the breed wrong, in the dark and confusion? You're saying that despite the numerous times that the media reported "pit bull" attacks that turned out to be attacks by other large dog breeds? For example 4 "pit bulls" attacked people in the parking lot of WTMJ's studios in Milwaukee a few weeks back...but then it turned out that three of the dogs weren't pits.

And those witnesses saw those dogs in broad daylight.

This is Free Republic where we all concur that the mainstream media is always guilty of hyperbole, distortion, and one-sided, agenda driven coverage when it comes to Iraq, immigration, firearms, the military, conservatism, the culture war, etc. However, when it comes to pit bulls, the MSM is totally objective and anything written or reported about pit bulls is to be taken at face value as the inviolable, sacrosanct truth.

You should be banned for violating the house rules against trying to inject facts into a pit bull thread. Your failure to use the terms "crack house," "meth lab," "gangster," etc. in discussing pit bulls and their owners is especially egregious as every right thinking person knows they must be discussed as one unified, inseperable issue.

So when is the last time that anyone ever heard of any other kind of dog doing something like this? Other than possible a wild one hunting for food. This bread of dog is inherently evil.

Do you have any idea how much you sound like the people who say handgun bans are OK because they can't imagine anyone needing to own one, and the kids might find it and on and on? Large dogs are mistaken for pits all the time when they're aggressive. I heard a rep from a pit rescue group in Chicago yesterday saying that in the attack by four "pit bulls" at WTMJ in Milwaukee, three of the dogs weren't pits and didn't even resemble pits. She said she's seen cases where a vicious attack by a "pit bull" turned out to be the work of a black lab.

Journalists call any short-haired dog that bites somebody a pit bull, because most journalists are irresponsible and looking for a sensational headline.

Gerald McClellean, the former middleweight champ, lives here in freeport. He once had a pit that could crush a basketball in her jaws...but the little kids in the neighborhood could play with it and it was as gentle as a bunny rabbit.

You are absolutely correct, I was totally out of line. Please don’t ban me...I used to be a Democrat, so i’m pretty sure I can remeber how to pretend that facts don’t matter and the media is responsible! Really I can!

“You have a bad case of media driven paranoia then.”

Perhaps, but more like media driven hated. I’ve heard too many heartbreaking stories of how these dogs rip faces off kids to give a crap about the supposed 90% “safe” ones. I’ve read here that these bred to kill dogs instinctively go for the kill points of head and neck and don’t let go when they snap rather than nip at hands like truly domesticated dogs . They have no rights.

If one took out either of my two toddlers, I’d without a doubt be doing time for what I did the the owners after I snapped.

I guess we'll let it slide this time, now that you're back on the reservation. It's time to ban these vicious assault dogs now!! And any firearm with a bayonet lug, and/or flash hider. They were designed with no intent other than use on the battlefield (i.e. "killing"). And SUVs...they all descend from the "JEEP" which was also designed for military (i.e. "killing") use.

Hopefully you'll stay on board with those of us who have come to realize that too much freedom can be hazardous...that's the only way we'll ever be able to ban all dangerous things and make this world a safe place for the children (at least those we've decided not to abort).

How much more evidence do you want that pit bulls either belong in zoos, or should be destroyed?

Failing that, that they should NOT be pets?

Is having a pit bull, as opposed to the hundreds of other species, REALLY worth risking the health of your neighbors, or even your family, or yourself?

Now, see, I can talk about this topic because I hit one over the head with half a 2x4 when it became attached to my brother’s right forearm when he was 5. I beat that dogs head until it was dead, and then I beat it some more.

It wasn’t going to let go, and I had to pry its mouth off of my brother when I was done.

So, let’s talk about pit bulls. I’ve owned dogs most of my young life. I don’t have pets anymore because the cats we had decided that my newly adopted daughter was a scratching post.

One of my mentors trains dogs for the military. He said, “There’s a reason why pitbulls are unsuitable for use as either attack dogs or as service animals.”

They belong in zoos or in mass graves. Take your pick.

Thank you for your gracious forgiveness, Comrade Joe, but now I'm not so sure you're following the proper path.

You see, nowhere in your post did you mention the most crucial truth one must know in dealing with these issues: Personal responsibility is way overrated. We cannot expect the state to punish those who abuse animals (or fail to restrain and train them properly, or use guns for murder) we must instead use the state to restrict the activities of all. It's just easier that way.

The fact that you did not elaborate this point makes me doubt your loyalty to the state...do you have anything you wish to confess?

Oh, and I almost forgot to meet my quota: Gangster. Crack House.
