This weekend's topic is online dating sites. We've all seen the ads for e-Harmony on TV and for Match.com at various places around the internet. Yahoo has a personals section. AOL has a personals section. Craig's List has a personals section (if your immune system is strong enough). The local ISPs in most major cities often have personals ads somewhere on their websites. Many specialty websites have arisen for special interest personals. ConservativeMatch.com and RepublicanPeopleMeet come to mind. The question is "Are any of these places any good?"
The major topic of this weekend's thread is a review of these sites. Do you have any experience with any of them? Did you like them? Would you recommend them? In general, how do you feel about online dating? Do you see online dating as being any different from the old personals magazines that we used to see in supermarkets? Would you consider having a long-term relationship with someone whom you met this way?
Again, this topic could be touchy to some people, and we ask that everyone be adult and be considerate.
We'd also like to thank Spirit of Allegiance for thinking of this one. His original idea was to spend a weekend each month looking at each site in depth, and if the topic is popular enough, we may return to a deeper exploration of some of these sites at a later time.
We also have a couple of bonus questions this week, and we'd like everyone to take a shot at one or two of them. They are:
1. What kind of car do you drive? What kind of car would you like to drive?
2. What kind of car would your ideal partner drive?
3. Your ideal partner just won $5000. How does she/he spend it?
One had a good experience and has been with his lady for nearly 20 years and married her about 5 years ago.
The other person met a few people and thought he had met the one but unfortunately she turned out to be a bit crazy and the family had so much baggage that eventually he had to exit from the situation which took him well over a year to start to recover from.
My take on this is regardless of where you initially meet the person and how the end results can be positive and can be negative.
On one level I suppose that if through an agency whether on line or not as long as each party is relatively honest in their views and interests then maybe you stand a better chance of being compatible with a person rather than someone you met by chance.
On the other hand we rarely meet people by chance most people we have as friends or a relationship with are through common interests whether they be social or professional so compatibility when we start up a relationship is probably similar whether we are matched by an agency or just meet someone.
Agree. However, a couple of weeks ago had a brief flirtation from someone at the local Black Angus Steakhouse that was kinda fun!
Good points, Snugs. I know five different people who met their mates online and to this day they’re very happily married still. And I know a few who have been dive-bombed in the relationship. It’s all what you put into it and in the choice that you make of who to pursue ... how honest is he/she being? And then there’s all the imponderables that only come out once you’ve gotten close to someone. Worth a shot. Definitely worth a shot.
No I think it is for farmers at heart. You don’t have to live on a real farm.
I think Iowa is great! I am from a river town in Illinois and have been across the Mississippi to Iowa a lot.
To answer your questions
1. What kind of car do you drive? What kind of car would you like to drive?
I do not drive but if I did it would be some medium size car such as a Vauxhall Astra or Ford Mondeo
2. What kind of car would your ideal partner drive?
Not important to me really but as I do not drive it would be useful for them to have a car and being a practical sort of person one that was suitable to carry stuff in such as DIY bits and luggage.
3. Your ideal partner just won $5000. How does she/he spend it?
Well the person that I had a long term relationship with and would be the type of person I would want to have as a partner if he won that amount of money he would be likely to just bank it and leave it there until he saw something that he really wanted so that it did not just get frittered away.
For example about 6 years ago he got left 1000.00 dollars when an ex neighbour died and still has not seen anything he really wants to buy with it as he wants to buy something special to remember the ex neighbour.
As you say won he might be more inclined to spend it if so maybe he would use it for holiday probably in Egypt or the States.
Regarding Oreos they are OK but if you like a more chocolate flavoured biscuit (cookie) try to get Brtiish Bourbon creams.

Yup, tried Yahoo!, E Harmony, Craigslist, Plenty of Fish, and one more called sexyads.
Did you like them?
I don’t like the fact that for the first two, they charge a pretty penny (E Harmony was pretty pricey as I recall),and there’s not much difference between them all, when it boils down to it.
Would you recommend them?
That’s a bit too subjective, really. BUT, if one doesn’t have any other outlet, what can one do? I guess in this case, one really has to make change happen.
In general, how do you feel about online dating?
It’s not the worst thing to happen, but finding someone via family, friends, work or some other thing one is involved in I think more preferable.

Nissan Armada *inherited it after step-father died...it was the last vehicle my folks bought, and I kinda steered them towards taking a look at it when the redesigned Dodge Durango didn’t quite fit their desire to be able to haul family....we’re not petit folk ; )
What kind of car would you like to drive?
My 1967 Chrysler 300 fast-top, after it gets some needed refurbishment! Soon!!!

Anything besides a German-make car, Hon-duh, or Lexus/Infiniti.*Opinionated?? Who? ME?? *

I've never tried one of them. I agree that Oreos are okay, but sometimes they really hit the spot. I think the cakes could be interesting. I'm at least going to give them a try.

1. Car models: I've always considered the car's performance & maintenance requirements more imortant than style, and from maker to maker these can change over the years. Whatever model has a good record / history at the time I am ready to buy. Well, comfort in the driver's seat is important, too.
2. Ideal partner's car model: whatever she would be happy with.
3. How partner should spend winnings: however she dawgone pleases.
