Welcome to the thread. We're glad to have you here.
This weekend's topic is online dating sites. We've all seen the ads for e-Harmony on TV and for Match.com at various places around the internet. Yahoo has a personals section. AOL has a personals section. Craig's List has a personals section (if your immune system is strong enough). The local ISPs in most major cities often have personals ads somewhere on their websites. Many specialty websites have arisen for special interest personals. ConservativeMatch.com and RepublicanPeopleMeet come to mind. The question is "Are any of these places any good?"
The major topic of this weekend's thread is a review of these sites. Do you have any experience with any of them? Did you like them? Would you recommend them? In general, how do you feel about online dating? Do you see online dating as being any different from the old personals magazines that we used to see in supermarkets? Would you consider having a long-term relationship with someone whom you met this way?
Again, this topic could be touchy to some people, and we ask that everyone be adult and be considerate.
We'd also like to thank Spirit of Allegiance for thinking of this one. His original idea was to spend a weekend each month looking at each site in depth, and if the topic is popular enough, we may return to a deeper exploration of some of these sites at a later time.
We also have a couple of bonus questions this week, and we'd like everyone to take a shot at one or two of them. They are:
1. What kind of car do you drive? What kind of car would you like to drive?
2. What kind of car would your ideal partner drive?
3. Your ideal partner just won $5000. How does she/he spend it?
That’s easy. We were both on a thread about relationships. He pm’d me about his current (liberal) girlfriend. I gave him very sound advice - and now we’re getting married in less than 2 weeks!
She pretty much just summed it up. But it was right here on the Singles’ Thread that we each started realizing just how special the other one was. :-)
Unfortunately, the Internet also lends itself to scammers and jerks.
Therefore...
In some ways I guess the not knowing (if the relationship would work) is probably harder than know that it would. My guy and I are best friends and have been for almost five years. In the beginning it was a physical relationship. After a year of that we had a fight about commitment and from then on it’s just very, very close friends. Sometimes I think the only answer is to end the friendship.
We chatted on the singles thread for a few weeks. We had already chatted on different threads so we knew our interests were similar. For some bizarre reason I gave him my number. We spoke for over 2 hours every night until he flew to Washington for a weekend. We knew from that first weekend that we were meant to be together.
Rockin’s better at telling the story though...
OK. Around July of 2005, I was having problems with the liberal loonie I was dating. We had chatted a bit on a few “fun” threads here on FR, mostly and I freepmailed her about some problems I was having. We chatted a bit and I even flirted with/hit on her a bit at that point, but denied it. ;-)
A few months later, on another thread she and I ran into each other again, and I made it known that I was now single. After some prodding, I got her phone number and called her one night, we talked for 2 hours a night for a couple months until I flew out to DC and we met. She was my tour guide as well, we had a great time, and knew we were meant for each other. Within a few months we had met each others’ families, she’d come out to Ohio, where I was living at the time, and I’d go to DC, going back and forth about every couple weeks from then until I moved to MD.
The rest is history! I proposed to her in November of 2006, and moved to Maryland in April 2007 to be with her. She could’ve moved out to Ohio and considered it, but economically it made more sense for me to move. Besides, I’d never left the city I was born in, so I figured...why not!
Two weeks from now, we’ll be on our honeymoon!
Hopefully, that was a good Monday-Morning-Pre-Coffee summary!
Wow...that makes my mushy-romantic ol’ self think there’s hope *happy sigh* Congrats!
Hey darlin, I’ve got a ferret, wanna talk???? LOL!
Personally, I think that a better place to meet women than dating sites is at weddings.
Isn’t there a movie about that????? ;p
I have a Myspace acct. Where do you find the Myspace Freepers?
