Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!
O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.
O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.
O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!
Afternoon/Evening (time zone dependent greeting) EGE. Time sure flies. One week and counting. We’ll be thinking of you and the future mrs next Saturday. OB & LSA
That will be much appreciated. OB & LSA
Speaking of culture, I really enjoyed the opera thingie. It’s like...lowbrow culture. Is that possible? ;-) There’s just something rather beautiful about folks watching opera whilst drinking Coke and eating popcorn, though I didn’t indulge in that myself...I didn’t wanna spend the money this time.
This first show was Romeo and Juliet. I already know and like Roberto Alagna, so that was good, and the gal who played Juliet was wonderful - and just adorable, to boot. The rest of the cast was good, too, especially Capulet and Mercutio.
During the set changes and part of the intermission, they talked with some of the performers, and with the conductor - none other than Placido Domingo. So that was pretty neat. Heh...kind of amazing how NOT fancy the back areas at the Met are, though. The public areas are so opulent that it was a bit of a shock seeing exposed pipes and worn paint and all in the halls and off-stage rooms.
The sound wasn’t as great as I’d kind of hoped, and overall it was more like watching an opera video on the big screen rather than like really being there, but still, I’ll go again.
So this was a film of the Met production? I saw a sign downtown a couple of days ago. Apparently they’d had a live production of “Romeo and Juliet” at the local high school. The school has set it up so that a local opera company can perform in their auditorium. They’ve done two or three, but I keep missing them. I remember my just older brother singing in “Die Fleidermaus” when he was in college. He also sang in “Lil Abner”. The Music Dept. there was outstanding and there were productions all the time.
It’s live video from the Met - basically a continuation of the radio show where they broadcast the live audio of the matinée performance. HD. It works out to start at ten in the morning here, which works for me!
The next one is Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel, then Verdi’s Macbeth. Don’t remember after that, except that La Boheme is coming along at some point in the spring, and it sounded like there was a great cast.
WooHoo “Live from the Met”!
that's what I remember about the joint ops we did with theArmy... their powerpoint presentations were waaaaay more fancy than ours...
remember muh Marlin 917 in .17HMR that I had tricked out with a 1 1/4 lb trigger and free-floated bbl?...
I hadda friend paint it fer me... he asked "what pattern?", and I said, "surprise me..." I think he done alright...
I’m fixing to head out for the “Messiah Sing”! Got my little bottle of water in my purse; I’m sure I’m gonna need it!
I’ve never done one of those, but they sure sound like fun!
Evening G’nad - now that is ART. Your friend is an artist. It’ll just disappear in the scenery on theridge.
I know you mentioned it at the time, what scope did you use?
The before picture shows the family resemblance to my 881.
Simmons 44 mag, mil-dot reticle... 6.5-20x44... stole it on Ebay...
been snowin' here... we've got a couple inches on the ground now... went out at dusk to hunt... was a beautiful sunset even with the driving snow... saw a bunch of yearlings out frolickin'... no mature does tho'...
My contribution this Saturday night is an (almost) complete Mossberg project.
I was hung up on optics until I remembered SWFA. I figured as a home defense weapon the Mossberg was justified in having some decent optics, and I had to economize somewhere. Their "sample list" has been good to me in the past (the ACOG on my PS90), so I looked again. Got a mid-grade Eotech at a real good price, although they mis-described it as using AAs, when it really uses N cells. The model number, 512A65, is clearly an "N" model, I guess they just didn't proofread their description.
While the N cell is a lot more expensive than AAs, it makes up for it by being a lot cheaper, and giving me a bit more room on the rail. I'll carry a spare pair inside the pistol grip, although run time is vey generous.
The other changes are the sidesaddle shotshell carrier, an OEM aluminum trigger guard to replace the plastic one, and a IR-reflective IFF flag for the Velcro patch on the ammo holder. It looks reddish due to the flash, but it looks like black and light tan in normal light. When viewed with NVGs and illuminated with IR, it reflects very brightly.
And, a view from the driver's seat.
The lack of a night vision setting on this Eotech also helps keep the cost down. This one was a demo model, and really pristine. It was a bit cheaper than a comparable Zeiss Z-point. The Zeiss is nice, and was my second choice, but an Eotech at this price really rocks. Nothing like seeing a nice, eye-catching aiming point at infinity projected into your eyeball.
As I was "putting it to bed" by using Loctite blue on threads that shouldn't be moving, I realized this isn't really a "shotgun" any more. It's now used just like a rifle, for aimed fire. So it needed a rifle-type sight, in this case the Eotech. It's just there may be projectiles like shot, slugs, or flechettes exiting the barrel, and not just a single bullet.
I also realize that I now need backup rifle sights, so I have a fold-down M16 front and rear rail-mount sights on order (the underlying theme of this entire project). If things go south, the Eotech comes off, and the iron sights get flipped up. This is no longer a "sporting" shotgun that just needs a bead front sight to give you some idea of where the muzzle is.
At one time, this would have been a perfectly fine shotgun that some liberal would allow me to have, provided I got government permission. Now it's something that, I hope, gives them nightmares.
This is one project that really ballooned. I started out putting on the tritium front sight, then decided to replace the notorious Mossberg plastic safety with a steel one. One thing led to another, and here's the (almost) final results.
Cool projects ........my current project is refining my Ruger No 1 45-70 hunting rig. Warne QD medium height max rings on a Leupold 1.5-5x VX-III. The scope is matte black as the VX-7 in 1.5-6X is $$$$ for almost same performance.
I also have a NECG # 100 peep sight as a backup iron sight carried in a grip cap compartment I installed from brownells.
A stock sock carries 9 spare and a neoprene / web sling gets me too and from .
Good rig.......for all my needs . Looking at limb-saver and Pachmayr for a recoil pad now as Garrets Hammerheads tend to pinch the shoulder now and then.
Now I gotta get to bed so we can get to Church in time for 9am Mass. Joseph will go to that Mass while we're in choir practice, then SirKit will break off to take him to work, and come back for 11am Mass. It's supposed to start snowing again tonight; I hope we don't get too much this time.
Morning G’nad - nice glass. Heard some good things about that scope.
Nothing quite like watching wildlife at sunset in a light snow. Sure get a peaceful feeling.
Morning Winmag - check out the link to the sample page. Good stuff there.
That mossy is really looks like it would give the libs nightmares. The eotech was a nice addition. Looks like you can carry 10 rounds or so and have eight ready to go in the tube. Darn near a box of ammo at your finger tips.
Spent yesterday de-leafing the yard and putting up the rest of the Stormhands' Holiday Extravaganza (TM). Took longer than anticipated and I still have a reluctant wise man that doesn't want his light to shine this Christmas season.
Last night was the nayberhood Christmas walk. Four houses, one hour each. A good wine was had by all (and beer, a scotch and bourbon...).
This mornin' Mrs. is realizing she can't get everything done she wants to afore she flies out. Choir is singing the CD music (I opted out, I can't stand that long in one place). Kids choir is singing with them (they're on the CD). Then there's lunch and Nana and still needing to get expenses in afore she flies out...cain't all be done.
Of course...I knew that and said as much, but cain't say it again now......so there's that.
Morning Corin - Four houses, four hours, glad you all were walking. :-)
The winter so far is raising heck with the Nayber’s ‘Griswald’ display. We figure by New Year’s Day, we’ll have more function lights than they do. We did the candle in each window and wreath on the door this year.
