The Hobbit Hole XXXIV - But better than rain or rippling streams...

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:52:15 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

Yeah, the two sisters in White Christmas were the dancer, Vera Ellen, and the singer, Rosemary Clooney. Looking at the outfits that Vera Ellen wore, the short ‘pants’ look like diapers, cause they’re so puffy. I guess it was the ‘modest’ way for her to wear the more skimpy costumes. I’m amused when watching her dance solos, because she always hammed it up for the camera. “Sisters”, the number that they do as part of their nightclub act, is one of the cutest songs.

I'd completely forgotten about The Midnight Special.

It is a blast from the past, isn't it? Did y'all get any snow out of this storm, or is it mostly just in the Northeast? Our little snowman measuring stick says we've gotten 6 inches, so far, and it's supposed to continue snowing until 11pm tonight. Fortunately, it's supposed to be clear tomorrow, when Clare flies in. Then clear again on Saturday, when I go to the 'Messiah Sing'.

We're getting a Nor'easter on Sunday afternoon, but it clears out early Monday, which is good, because David is flying in Monday night! We lucked out with the weather and flight times, that's for sure!

No, it’s too warm for snow here. It’s raining, but in the 50s. It’s been up in the 70s most days this week.

That’s what it’s been here. I haven’t seen snow for Christmas since 1999.

How perfectly - and I mean *perfectly*- cute is this little quilt for a baby boy?? I'm full of giggles over it.

That is really precious, but I think I’d put a lizard, gecko or salamander in that center square. ;o)

They're using the "S" word for tomorrow and Saturday.

I've got some Turkey and disc 1 of The Best of Mister Ed.

The snowman measuring stick now says 9”. It’s really coming down out there! Nice night for a fire in the fireplace!

I thought it said something about “soap and water cleanup”.

So I ended up with a soapy film of caulk all over my hands.

Eww.

Totally cute!

Eek...the last thing I need is to get into quilting...

Maybe it’s a good thing sewing machines are so pricey. Though...I could hand quilt pretty easily, couldn’t I? Hrm.

Yeah, it’s nasty. I’ve forgotten and licked my finger when smoothing out caulking before, that’s why I said that. A wet finger is the best tool for smoothing it out, but you gotta remember NOT to put it in your mouth after you’ve dragged it through the caulk!

Evening - Ike and Tina Turner - that’s a blast from the past. I saw them back in ‘67 or ‘68 at Mizzou. Student Activities had them in at Jesse Hall Auditorium. Their bus had broken down and they rented some cars to get make the venue. It was late in starting but they made up for lost time fast, put on quite a show. There wasn’t any special effects in those days, not even the smoke or flashing lights. They could get the audience in the aisle just by their music ability. Dang, that was a good show.

Did some mention “Midnight Special”

“Well you wake up in the morning, hear the ding dong ring,
You go a-marching to the table, see the same damn thing
Well, it’s on a one table, knife, a fork and a pan,
and if you say anything about it, you’re in trouble with the man...”

Oh yes, quilting is major-league addiction. Moving to our current house was good rehab because the sewing room is upstairs and my sweetheart tends to be downstairs. That’s how I ended up back with the gateway craft: crochet. :)

Quilting is pricey... the fabrics cost quite a good bit, you know. And they have just so many different fabrics...

Linemen from Myrtle Beach SC came and repaired a downed power line in my yard this afternoon. I was home from work and I went out there with a large thermos full of coffee, set it up on the tailgate of Steve’s truck with styrofoam cups, spoons and sugar.

There was no better feeling in the world than watching those big burly linemen picking up a cup of my coffee as they finished up. I nearly cried.

I worked at a special needs shelter on Tuesday with the Medical Reserve Corps. A shelter that houses people who need medical observance of some sort while they’re in the shelter...Down’s Syndrome, emphysema and on oxygen...special needs people who do ok in their own homes, maybe but with no electricity or such...need special help in a shelter. Basically, I made sure they were stable enough to stay in the shelter and got them a cot and made sure they got meals.

Plus, I’m taking a telemetry (heart rhythm strip monitoring) class and working on the floor at the hospital where I work now.

I’m tired, but feel great! Alive!

I’m off the weekend, but plan to work at a different shelter this Sunday with Southern Baptist Disaster Relief.

So you know...expect me when you see me!
