The Hobbit Hole XXXIV - But better than rain or rippling streams...

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:52:15 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

Good morning.

I may get my snow day today... supposed to get a couple inches... maybe! Hope so!

Not going to last long though, a storm is coming through Sunday and Monday that will be warm (40s) wet, and ... [windy]. Hopefully not so bad we need to sit in the truck.

Morning - Gunner has the right idea, no ducks or geese to be fetched, might as well stay in his house and watch ‘animal planet’ on his TV.

Whoa - now that’s the ticket. Nice tool - beats the heck out of the old decapper and reamer tools.

Not much planned today, got a patchbox I’m filing. Rough cast brass, slowly smoothing it out. I picked up an old repro .58 Zouave, the patchbox is one I had from years back. It’s for the Mississippi Rifle so with a bit of inletting and I’ll have a passable copy for the military class shoots.

Yep...just rain and cold and drear. A good day for making soup.

Miss Cat seems content curled up on a blanket under the coffee table and I’ve got housework on the agenda for today. What fun.

I need a better attitude to get through this, but I can’t seem to find it.

As we Catholics say, "Offer it up." ;o)

Just for you, g'nad:

Speaking of Dillon, last week's episode of Mythbusters had a guest appearance by the Dillon Aero minigun-equipped GMC. Those guys obviously have an "in" with BATFE and state and local cops. They get to play with weapons and explosives that would get other Californicates thrown in jail. Jamie shot up a dead fish in a 55-gallon drum of water. For several thousand rounds. All that was left was a little bit of laced steel, and sushi-bits. And they get paid to do it.

Although they must get paid for their good looks, rather than their knowledge of firearms. I'd rate Jamie as "average hobbyist" and Adam as "clueless". At least it gives me a chance to yell at the TV. How much knowledge does it take to know that horseshoe nails packed into a cardboard cylinder and arranged sharp-end-forward makes a good point-blank antipersonnel round for a blackpowder cannon?

Still, it was instructive to see the high-speed video of what nails, grapeshot, or a length of chain does to a hog carcass.

On top of being as cold as a well digger's butt outside, it's also vey windy. It's 24 degrees outside, but Weather.com says it feels like 9 degrees! Thankfully, we finished pouring the footings for the new deck yesterday! We decided NOT to work outside today. ;o)

We still have to set the tubes and pour the piers, but we'll wait for a little bit warmer day to do that. It's supposed to be rain or snow tomorrow night, so we've got the area all covered up. I'm hoping the snow holds off until we can at least get the piers poured and the holes filled back in!

Be sure to FReepmail us your temp address!

I just got an email ad from LApolicegear.com about a half-off sale on the 5.11 parka. They have a batch that was made from a fabric two shades lighter than their "official" color, and they're blowing them out. Otherwise, everything is brand new, and comes with all the free goodies and warranty.

I have one in dark green, and it's a great coat for nasty, cold weather. It also has about a dozen hidden pockets. I'm still trying to find the wool watch cap I stashed away somewhere in my coat.

Now that's SOME hidden pocket! I'm thinking about getting one of those hunter's caps, with the fold down ear flaps, for working outside. A watch cap, or headband slides up my hair when I'm working, and then doesn't keep my ears covered. The flaps will definitely do the trick! SirKit has one of those wool tweed driving caps that has fold down ear flaps. He says it keeps his head and ears nice and toasty.
