The Hobbit Hole XXXIV - But better than rain or rippling streams...

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:52:15 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

Well, I’m callin’ it quits at 57436. It’s not even close to a first draft, but I figger that might have to wait until later.

I’m thinking of ditching writing tonight in favor of going to a Great Books discussion group at the bookstore. It could be interesting...or it could be a bunch of pontificating know-it-alls. I have about twenty minutes to decide if I wanna risk it. ;-)

It looks like "Renegade Chaplain" now has the callsign "Star Shephard". I sent him a Hobbit Hole goodie package a couple of weeks ago, and received this email today:

----------

What a wonderful surprise to see your name on the customs form when I picked up your package. What an even bigger surprise to see the generous items that you sent for our Soldiers. Thank you so much for your kindness and encouragement. It's been such a blessing to tell the story of the sacrificial support that you and the other wonderful people of the Hobbit Hole provided for our Soldiers in Afghanistan in 2003. I've been blessed the last week being able to share some of those stories once again after I received your package.

I met with my XO and shared your letter and the items with him a few days before Thanksgiving. We decided that it would be best to use the items as prizes for the events (pool tournament, ping-pong tournament, etc.) that the unit was doing on Thanksgiving. Thank you so much for your help in making what could have been a down day into as good a day as possible.

As for me, my family and I are doing pretty well. We're both staying busy which makes the time go by quickly.

Thank you, again for your encouragement and generous gifts. Thank you most of all for your prayers -

Blessings,

Chris

CH (CPT) C D

Chaplain, Task Force xxxx

-------------------------

I'll be getting together a shipment for Christmas based on what's still on hand, and able to be mailed soon.

You have no idea about the big smile I got when I saw his name on the email. A great counter to a cold, wintry day with no sunshine.

Yeah, Joseph took the computer test for Geek Squad, and didn't get anywhere with that. Don't know if it was his age, or if they thought he just wasn't cut out for it.

He really wanted to work at Radio Shack, and even got to a long interview, but I think they were looking for folks older than 18, who might have to be there by themselves or with just one other person late in the evening. That's ok. He's enjoying being a Wal-Martian, and with the experience in this job, it will help him in the future. His older brother is jealous, though, because that's the job HE wanted when he got his first job, also at Wal-Mart. Instead, he ended up pushing carts and working in the stock-room. He didn't stay there long. ;o)

Just getting that first job is the hardest thing, sometimes. Clare was going to try to apply for some seasonal part time work for when she's home for Christmas. I've got to send her a 'care package' tomorrow, so I'll ask at the Post Office to see if they will be hiring in the local distribution center over the holidays. She'll be here for almost a month, so she could make a bit of money.

I lucked into my first job, when I was 18, because a new store like Wal-Mart was opening and they needed lots of folks. I ended up in the Baby Furniture dept., and got to assemble the beds, strollers, etc for display. Once a couple walked by with a screaming baby, and I asked if they'd like to put him in the rocking swing. They did, and the kid went totally silent. We were all stunned, and they said they'd take it. I went to get them one in a box and they said "No, we want THIS one!" I asked the Manager if it was ok for me to sell a floor model, and he said "Sure, just put another one together, so we'll still have a floor model.". That was a vey happy couple!

I actually did a face to face interview with Radio Shack...and the guy liked me. But he said I didn’t meet their profile requirements on the test. Go figure.

Oh heck no...

Do we gets to read it?

To twist a fine author's opening line... I don't know if there's enough burbon in the world to help you get through it.

Because I wrote in chunks and there are several subplots, some chunks are more developed than others. Some are completely missing. If you get much past the first act you'll be scratching your head puzzling how/when certain stuff happened. *sigh*

I'm going to give myself a 1-week break before looking at it again. Lots of other stuff goin on at home to occupy time & thought.

It's a great line. :)

Am currently fielding emails via my boss on my boss' boss' question about a certain study that I commissioned. I'm annoyed because my boss' boss should know that I am in charge of the organization's overall effort for the project so if someone could answer the question, it would be me. This is why I'm leaving, fer cryin' out loud. Dancing nekkid on tables isn't an option.
