The Hobbit Hole XXXIV - But better than rain or rippling streams...

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:52:15 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

Heck, I get paranoid about lawnmower handles sticking out of the trunk.

Hard drive. Memory. Full.

Discuss.

(IOW, what’s my best solution?)

Sigh.

I don’t want to think about the next time we try to buy something big... with Talon’s battlecruiser out of commission, we could be that silly yuppy couple.

Ok, desktop or laptop? Current drive size? What do you store on your machine? How often do you access that information?

Hard drive. Memory. Full.

Full of... Files? Applications? Music? Photos? Games?

Desktop. I’d have to double check the size.

I think that one of my problems is that, we’ve had this for 4 years and with up to five people using it, I don’t know what all is on the hard drive. I’ve tried to clean it up, but I’m scared to delete too much.

I’m sure there’s stuff that could come off.

I’ve doubled the memory, but it’s the hard drive that’s almost full.

Thought folks are supposed to smoke that stuff!

It's tough to get it to stay lit.

SirKit bought an external hard drive that we call “The Vault”. It is where he downloads information that we would not want lost in a major meltdown of the computer; family and financial info, Clare’s drawings and videos, etc. In the event we needed to get out of the house fast, it’s easily disconnected, and we take it, and all our vital information, with us.

Well, you’re not going to want to just replace the current drive with a larger one, I think. That would require reinstalling Windows and all your programs.

So your options are A. install a second hard drive inside the computer or B. add an external drive. Option A is cheaper and you can get at the data faster. It requires opening up your computer and attatching a new drive, then getting Windows to realize the drive is there. Once that happens, you’re golden. Option B means buying a 100 gig, or more, external drive, that connects to a USB port on your machine. The data access is a bit slower, but it can be more convenient. It’s also likely to be more expensive. But you don’t have to install anything.

Don’t buy less than 100 gig, it’s not worth it for less than that. 250 gig drives are fairly reasonable priced and would give you another couple years...

It’s almost a given that there is a potentially vast harvest of junk files, temp files and frap that can just go away.

Then the easiest thing to do is to get a big USB drive and move the file storage over there. Better yet, get two and use the second as a backup of the first.

If you can get the internal drive down under 50% full and do a defrag... performance will noticeably improve.

I try to clean up as much of that as I safely can. Is there a way to weed through all that frap and know what's safe to go and what isn't?

It's a Dell Dimension 2350. They don't sell those anymore. Can I increase the internal hard drive on that, or is the extrernal still my best bet?

I’ve tended to “upgrade” via an external drive as a step between upgrading computers. I find it a very convenient and flexible option that retains usefulness even after you upgrade the main box.

That makes sense. Ideally, I’d like to upgrade the whole system. But that’s not happening anytime soon.

And, if Jr. does manage to transfer to Virginia Tech sooner than we think (2 years), I’ll have to buy a whole new system for him anyway.

This weekend’s search though is for a new printer.

A big USB drive would work best...though depending on how old the system is, you may want to also pick up a USB 2.0 card. They’re cheap.

If your system only has USB 1.0 right now, a large external hard drive is almost useless, because transferring large amounts of data is impossibly slow.

Okay, I ~think~ I understood that. But I’ll look at the system tonight and will probably have more questions.

I’m looking at the manual for your model now, and it does say USB 2.0 compliant.

So the external hard drive should work fine!

Thanks. I’ll shop around and come back with options. But again, that’s probably next month.

The color cartridge holder on our printer pooped out (I think I mentioned this a while back). We need to replace the printer. Jr. could have used color for his speech project the other day. It was okay without it, but would have been better with color.

I almost took out a squirrel this morning on my bike. I was on the portion of my ride that is on a path, and he came busting out of the bushes with a big nut in his mouth and almost ended up with his head right in front of my wheel as it came down. Totally oblivious. I swerved a bit and missed him; he finally looked up and noticed me, dropped the nut and ran. Poor little guy...

His momma apparently didn’t teach him about looking both ways.

Squirrels run faster when they hear you rev the engine.
