The Hobbit Hole XXXIV - But better than rain or rippling streams...

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:52:15 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

Morning, all.

Raining here. Again. Or still. Supposed to be gusty, too. :-\

It was really foggy here most of the morning.

Just got back from the Fred Thompson rally that was down the street. I will have to post pictures when I get him.

Heh...that’s a pretty funny typo. Gonna kidnap Fred for a photo shoot?

Very ugly outside here. Rain falling sideways. Hate it when that happens.

I shot this great shot of him kissing his wife and the durn thing was blurry. Stupid autofocus was not fast enough. Most of the rest came out though.

Well, the only good thing I can say about today is that the rain is once again mostly coming straight down.

Sheesh it’s dark and dreary out. And ~muddy~.

Been watching MSNBC news... we were just been honored with the daily “Worst Weather in America” recognition. ;~)

It’s crappy out. Just plain unpleasant.

But in other news... my new gun came in today! Woohoo! Picked it up on the way in to the office. Immediately walked around the corner and went to the range and put a box of shells through it.

It’s really cool. Very light. Good in a coat pocket. No snaggy bits.

Range report:

The sight is just a groove down the top of the slide... and I really like it. It’s very quick to acquire and point.

Kicks like a fargin’ mule... but I knew to expect that. The slide is so short and light that there’s just no mass to absorb any energy. Gotta have a firm grip. It really wants to jump out of your hand. But dang... it shoots easy. Very natural pointing and making holes. Even tho the barrel is only 3in it is plenty accurate for close in (like under 25 feet) sorts of ranges. Very easy to keep seven in the black at 15-20ft or so.

Tried a couple different rounds. Started out with just practice grade FMJ. Also bought some of the new Federal Tactical HST 230g. It gobbled them both without any trouble. Both the factory magazine and an extra SS magazine worked without any issues.

Neato. :-)

Cool :~)

Well, I’ve been outside in the mud. The horses have spent most of the last few days standing around in the barn and the stalls reflect that. Or rather the stalls were piled high in that. Clean now... but the horses are probably out there making more ;~)

And I think I’m getting a sore throat...

Does it use a recoil spring guide? If so, you might want to look for (or wait for) a tungsten one. I put them in my Glocks, replacing the plastic ones, just to add a bit more mass up front.

Adding more weight, without changing the size, might make it more shootable, although not as light as earlier.

I now realize the loaded magazine in my Glock .45 represents a very large portion of the overall weight. In comparison, 5.7mm ammo is nearly weightless.

We had our department Christmas lunch today. Main topic of conversation was guns and ammo....mostly by the ladies present.

Kimber's Ultra Carry models, which this RCP is merely a cousin of, use a dual recoil spring. One inside the other. So the spring guide is pretty narrow. I don't know if it could add much weight if it were depleted uranium. :-)

But I don't think I'd want to anyway. My whole mission in deciding on this pistol was to have an uncompromising carryable .45 that's as absolutely lightweight as possible. I plan to carry it often. I'm OK with the kick, and it's not so violent that rapid fire is inaccurate. I was able to quickly follow-up shots and keep them all in a center-mass sized area.

One more pic... just 'cuz it's so pretty:

Heh... at my local watering hole there’s a couple of ladies like that. One of them is a nurse, and she can talk guns like a Marine. She carries concealed *every* day, and shoots at the range about once a week.

Dang... :-)

Sounds like you have a pretty good group of people to work with!

All in all, I had a good day even though the tax collector had morphed our ‘95 (now sold) truck into a 2002 model. I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was to get that straightened out, and it reduced the tax bill substantially!

When I came home and returned my sister’s call I discovered that OB and I are now grand (or is it great) uncle and aunt to a 9lb 2oz, 21 inch long baby girl born at 12:37 this afternoon. Gots to find baby gift!
