FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:33:14 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

I was wondering how your bunch made it, so I’m glad to hear that it was relatively uneventful.

I never did get back out after I came home from feeding the horses. We just crashed on the couch and watched TV, but according to the 10pm news, the rain did stop in time for the local municiple fireworks shows, so that’s good. I did hear some fireworks going off down the road so I’m assuming the grand kids got to set off a few out behind their house too. I was just too full of steak to care.

They were giving a good chance of rain today too, but later on in the afternoon, so I called Shirley around 6 this morning to see if he was doing an early ride but he was having his family’s 4th of July celebration today. Kari is gone to a horse show, Carolyn couldn’t make it up, my hubby’s working on the bulldozer with his dad, so I just decided to bum around the house. I’ve gotten a little clean-up work and laundry done. I think I’ll head to the barn and do a little work down there. If it doesn’t rain, we’ll ride somewhere tomorrow. Talk to ya later!

Maureen had a cook out, that she invited me to. Her son and granddaughter from Houston were here for a few days. Maureen's bf is a EMS and was on duty. Him and a few other firemen came with the ambulance and a fire truck. The kids were so excited! They all got little plastic firemen hats and got to sit in the fire truck. It was fun to get out and see her again.

My kids went to a horse show, yesterday. Alison won high-point and got a red/white/blue horse blanket!

Wow, the only thing better than a 4th of July cookout is a 4th of July cookout with a fire truck, provided that the fire truck isn’t CALLED to the 4th of July cookout of course. ;o) I’ll bet the kids DID have a blast.

The red-white-and-blue saddle blanket is a cool prize, and even moreso on the 4th. I’ll bet she was tickled.

Hi ladies!

Loving it here in CA. San Fran. was a special sort of crazy. The city kind of scared me, actually. Talk to you soon!

I had a sympathy card yesterday from the vet I took Nikki too. Is that a common practice among vets? Kind of nice to do.

Yes, my vet has sent them out when I’ve taken animals in too. It is nice of them.

Good morning... How were your fireworks? We had a little more last night.

Did kitty ever show up?

I’m a bit aggravated this morning. I’ve now had two nestfulls of baby barn swallows disappear from their nests in just a few hours. Both times the babies were big enough to sit on the edge of the nest, all their feathers, but not big enough yet to fly off. The first nest full...I suspected Bink altho I had no clue how he would have got to them, and the possibility of them all falling out in such a short time seemed remote. But now it’s happened again. Do you know, would other birds steal them??? I noticed some other birds in the redbud tree in the garden making a lot of noise this morning, I think sparrows, before I realized the babies were gone.

Gosh - I don’t know, would have to be a pretty big bird like a crow to fly off with a baby, wouldn’t it?

I’m sorry Bink didn’t return. I’ll keep a little bit of hope that he will... or that someone picked him up.

It is a little quiet here, but monitoring the one little one so she doesn’t leap on a dog and get herself eaten, or slip out the door yet, or get into other trouble, is still a little busy ;~)

You’ve got a snake there somewhere that’s eating them. Probably a big chicken snake. You’d be amazed how well a snake can climb when they put their minds to it.

I knew that’d thrill ya!

But look on the bright side, you shouldn’t have any mice around there either. ;o)

Oh, my, you know I’ve noticed I’m not finding as much evidence of mice as I had this past winter.

I bet it’s living under the house, several times I’ve seen Susie barking at one of the grates in the foundation...I’ve wondered what was under there:)

The worst thing about that thing maybe being under the house, is someone, has to go under there soon. I think Grizzly messed up some duct work for the AC when he was going under there this winter. I finally got a heavy enough rock that he couldn’t push it aside to hold the board over the opening, but I think the damage was already done. There is a funny whistling sound coming from under there when the AC is on. Right under the porch.

Oooooo, THAT’LL be fun! I’d just make sure that it wasn’t me if I was you. Maybe Charlie will do it.

I absolutely HATE going under houses. There’s always all kinds of spiders under there and I hate spiders worse than anything. Snakes I can handle.

~shuddering~ about the snake.

I called the cops on the fireworks last night. They were firing them off after we went to bed, at almost 11. That’s it. I gave them a weekend to freely annoy me, now I’ve declared it enough. Even if I could sleep through the fireworks, I can’t sleep through Gidget barking at them or Homer clawing at me and whining.

I don’t blame you a bit. Apparently they didn’t have to get up and go to work this morning like the rest of the world.

I got in a good ride yesterday. I rode Whirl again and she did great. I couldn’t have asked for her to have been much better, so I guess the problems she had with the trainer were just a personality conflict. She went down those big steps to the creek with no problem, went over logs and through mud and really got settled into her gait good. She’s pretty smooth and pretty darned fast for a youngster. I had no problem with her being slow or lazy. She tends towards a pace, like Bob, but it’s not hard to square her up. She listens and guides well, so I was pleased. The only thing she does that’s a little aggravating is she wants to go down the trail a little crooked, but that seemed to get better as the day went on.

Kari and Hal bought ANOTHER horse at the horse sale in Shelbyville on Friday, a 9yr old sorrel and white SSH gelding, and he took him to try him out. He’s really pretty and seems like a really nice smooth-going horse, and he did pretty well, outside of a few rough spots at the start. The people they got him from had left a halter or something on him and it had really messed his chin up. Hal couldn’t really use a chin chain on him and he was pretty charged up the first few minutes of the ride. He reared up pretty high a time or two but Hal handled it well and everything was fine. He also wasn’t used to saddle bags and he bucked several times whenever he went over a rough spot and they flapped on him, but by the end of the ride he was so tired that he really didn’t care about bucking anymore. It was a good break-in ride for him.

So what did the cops do?

Frog, sounds like Whirl is going to be a very nice horse.

I went fishing today, didn’t catch anything but I had a good time.

I think most of Frog’s babies turn into good horses. Good lines I think, good training, and good experience. You should be proud of them Frog!

As for me... I’m not sure the cops got there or not, I didn’t ask for a followup, but the fireworks stopped shortly after.

Before, when I have asked for followup, they’ve stopped by and told me they either caught them or not. I’m such a stick in the mud, I know. These aren’t just little fireworks, they’re the illegal ones from the reservation... Lots of the jurisdictions have been fining people in addition to just taking the fireworks. I think it depends... maybe on how many times they’ve been out to the same house.

I mowed lawn today, and took the kitten on a bit of a walk outside on a long line, let her explore.

Fishing sounds like fun. Lord, I haven’t been since I was 12 or 13 years old. I always enjoyed just sitting on a creek bank with a cane pole and some crawdad tails. I could catch all kinds of little bream and perch and bass that weren’t good for anything, but they sure were fun to catch. I never could do any good with a rod and reel though.
