FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:33:14 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

Well yeah! I mean geeze. It’s like ai just said on the horse forum. He was in one of the dust holes they dig just to roll in... am I supposed to go fill all those in now so my fool horse doesn’t get stuck in them?

Hair, I just read the thread on Bay on the HF. I'm so glad that he's OK.

I'll be on your side of the country in August! I'm taking a week to go to California, (Palo Alto, San Fransisco, and San Jose) to see the fellow. We're going to go and see the redwoods, hang out in San Fran, etc. I'm wicked, wicked excited.

I just saw your post in the HF - wow, between Bay and Cyn, and the kittens do you have any nerves left? Keep an eye on Pony, it’s her turn now to scare the daylights out of you.

I know how frightened you must have been, that’s a heart stopping sight.

I couldn’t connect last night at all, some support I am.

Have a ball while you’re out here on the west coast :) It’s a beautiful part of the country. If you get to Tahoe or Carson City, give me a call, I’ll send a horse home with you :)

Bring your camera and take lots of pictures.

Everyone is on their feet this morning... well... the dogs aren’t yet, but they’re fine :~)

Thanks. It was a scare, but a solvable one. Good practice for future scares. He just needed a little bit of a push to get up, thankfully, he’s too big to be trying to roll over even with two of us.

Hey cool! Sounds like a fun trip! I had a good time in SF. It’s a neat city. And we didn’t get to see the Redwoods.

I wish you were comin’ close enough to meet up! See if we approve of this feller of yours ;~)

Wow, what a fright! I’ll bet that scared a few years off your life.

Sounds like he just got himself in a dip in the pasture and his legs were pointing up hill no matter which way he rolled and he wore himself out trying to get up. I’ll bet he won’t repeat the mistake of rolling in that particular dust hole for a while! Glad to hear he’s ok.

He was definitely in a gutter he couldn’t get out of. It’s right where their path is worn through, and then they’d dug it real soft so he just couldn’t get out of it.

Here's the hole he got stuck in. There at the end where you can see it's been layed in. Picture his barrel in the hollow, and his head coming towards us and his legs pointed left, up that rise, and he couldn't quite get his feet under him.

Strong horse, done in by that!

Sounds like a fun trip. Throw on your tourist hat and do it up right while you’re there.

I got to go to SF for a week on business several years ago and had a blast. I was in a class during the day but every afternoon some of us got together and took a roadtrip and did the Total Nerdy Tourist thing. I went downtown and found Lombard Street and drove down it. That’s the steepest, crookedest street I’ve ever seen! Then went down to the Golden Gate Bridge and walked about half way across. Dang that thing is long! One day we went to Half Moon Bay. They rent horses to ride on the beach there. I didn’t get to do that though because the other folks didn’t ride but it was still fun. I just had to strip off my shoes and go stick my toes in the Pacific Ocean and let me tell ya, it’s a heck of a lot colder than the Atlantic. We went to Muir Woods one afternoon to see the Redwoods and Dang they’re big! We made it out to Nappa Valley one afternoon and did a winery tour. Then we drove down the coast road towards Santa Cruz another afternoon and visited a lighthouse. We were looking for whales or elephant seals on the beach but it wasn’t the right time of year. I also wanted to drive across all the bridges, especially the Golden Gate and the Bay Bridge, but made it across the San Mateo and the Richmond bridge too. San Quinten is out that way, but I didn’t really want any part of seeing that, other than from a distance. ;o) I would have liked to have toured Alcatraz and China Town too but there just wasn’t time.

I guess I’m just a hick from the sticks so all that kinda stuff just facinates me. I don’t get out very much so when I do I guess I think I gotta pull out all the stops. ;o)

I think he just got himself cast in a hole.

I had a horse cast on me once, it was about 9:00 at night. I had never seen it nor even heard of it and I freaked. Sent hubby up to the neighbors (my farrier) to tell him we had a horse down and see if he could come help. By the time he got down there I had gotten her up and was walking her. He checked her out and said it did not look like colic and explained what casting was. It made sense but sure as heck scared the daylights out of me.

I toured Alcatraz, and I definitely recommend it! Also the crooked street, have to do that... and ride streetcars :~)

It’d have been scary if we really would have needed to roll him over. He’s got such a wither it would not have been easy at all. Live and learn Bay...

That IS a pretty good-sized dip!

Not that you would have really wanted him to, but I’ll bet he could’ve gotten himself out of there if something REALLY scared him. He would’ve scrambled and rolled around SOME way and got his feet under him, even if he scraped himself up in the process. I’ve seen horses get out of places that you didn’t think they could ever get out of when something or somebody put the fear of God in them.

Hubby amd I went there about 4 years ago and we did get to ride. It was pretty neat and the horses were not to barned sour, they were used to running on the beach so as soon as we hit the sand they wanted to open it up.

It’d have been scary if we really would have needed to roll him over.

I did have to roll Eve over, I got a lead rope and looped it around her bottom leg and rolled her away from the wall, she was able to get up then. I knew if I tried to just pull her around I would get kicked as she was coming around so I used the lead rope.

Now I’m jealous! That sounds like fun!

I got to ride a horse in the ocean once when we were on one of our dive trips, but I can’t remember which one. It was somewhere in the Carribbean though, so the water was warm. I don’t think I’d wanna be doing it in SF, even in the summer. Brrrrrr!

I'd hope so... Otherwise, he'd be helpless as an overturned turtle layin' there.

He needed me yellin' at him and just a little push. Hubby said it's like us, when we get sunk down in a comfy chair. ;~)
