FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:33:14 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

For all the incidents, you guys (and horses) came out pretty good. Those are the kind of times that make for good campfire conversations in a few years. Speaking of camp fire, the truck in the fire picture, looks just like mine!

HaveFaith, I do have to ask you why you are always holding your reins so tight, in the pictures you post? Does Daisy not want to stand still?

Those are great pictures guys. Beautiful trail pictures but I’d have skipped all the disasters personally :)

The kittens are adorable, of course! I’m really glad you don’t live close to me so I can’t be tempted. If you have a state humane society, they may give you a voucher to cover part of the cost of spaying on feral cats. Nevada does so it only costs me $20.

Frog, on the horse.com forum some lady replied to my thread in Horses for Sale and it sounds like she needs a gaited horse. I didn’t want to give your name without checking with you and I don’t know where she’s at. It’s KarenL if I remember correctly.

How are you doing? How are your friends that lost the filly? I was thinking about them the other day and what a horrible thing that would be to go through.

Yes, we were fortunate nothing was permanent. Hope Shane is over his limp. Gary swears he was faking to get out of being ridden.

Daisy will stand still if the group is. We were going down the trail in that particular picture and I only ride with a loose rein if we are walking slow. In the one by the lake at the Best of America ride, we were in sight of the camp on the second ride of the 3rd day and she got stopped for a picture on the way to her trailer. I did good to hold her that long.

That is our hauling truck. We can't afford to drive it anywhere unless we have to have the power.

I knew there were 2 black ones and kept looking till I saw the ears sticking up hanging onto something on the side of the cage. They are 2 cute!! Bet you have never a dull moment.

We got her! We got the momma cat!

She doesn't look any more pleased with me than the last time I saw her that close. Poor thing.

So I'll be taking her in to the clinic this morning. I may look into those vouchers, because I think there may be another coming.

This wasn't the first cat we trapped. Early in the evening, we caught her sister. If you recall, there were the two sisters all along, and I always saw them together, but hadn't seen Sister 1 since the kittens came about. While I was pleased to see she was still around. I was a bit perplexed what to do with her, because when we looked close at her, she's also bagged up as if she's nursing a litter somewhere. (sigh)

Well, I didn't want to make her abandon those kittens to starve, wherever they are, so we let her go, but I immediately regretted it, wondering if we'd ever catch her again, and when exactly the right time would be to catch her again, if not now. Perhaps the kittens would survive her being gone just a couple days. I didn't know. But I wasn't prepared to catch two, I wanted the momma of this set of kittens. I was pleased to see that she was REALLY hungry and went immediately to the food we have on the porch, so she didn't just run off, she hasn't given up on us, we may be able to get her again.

I was pleased, at least, when I woke up, to see we had gotten our target cat, who is now in the back of the Ranger in the cage, feeling pretty surly.

I'll be taking her in this morning.

I’m waiting on my farrier, he was suppose to be here at 8:00:\

Kristy brought Harley back last night so he would be here to be shod today, then he’s going back to her house.

How’s he doing?

Outstanding. She’ll be happier when it’s all over, no more litters to feed.

That’s great about catching MamaCat. She sure does look pissed! I’ll be anxious to see how she does, both before and after.

Too bad you couldn’t take SisterCat in too, but I understand your reason for letting her out. I’d hate to think about starving little kittens too. Hopefully she didn’t have them TOO close by or she’ll be teaching them about the NiceLadyWithFoodOnHerPorch and you’ll end up having to deal with them too. I’ll bet you can catch her again pretty soon though. Just quit putting food on the porch and put the cage back out there with the door open and food in it for a while and she’ll get used to it again.

I checked out your For Sale thread on Horse.com and BOY do you have some gorgeous horses! Seeing pictures of them all at one time like that is really impressive. You did a really good job with that.

I saw LindaL’s post and it does sound like she needs a gaited horse, but I don’t know that any of mine would be suitable for her. They’re all relatively young and still have quite a few quirks left in them. With her physical problems, she really needs an older, finished horse. Riding with Osteoporosis really sounds like an accident waiting to happen to me, although I understand her desire to continue doing it. I know I would, but one bad fall and she could be done for.

I don't doubt that's exactly what she'll do. :~\

Thanks.

I am surprised that she does much riding, since I can’t. It has got to be very painful for her and like you say, an accident waiting to happen. My doctor told me one fall and I’m looking at being a parapalegic - I’m sure she’s been told the same thing. That’s why I pretty much stopped riding when I had to put Lady down. It wasn’t just a matter of a comfortable horse, it was also knowing without a doubt the horse would take care of me. If she’s going to ride though, it sounded like a gaited horse would be the right thing.

So when do you go pick up MamaCat? I read your account of her trip to the vet’s over on the HH. It was good that she didn’t stress out in the cage and that they sedated her before they ever got her out. How did they do that, a syringe on a stick or what?

How are your friends that lost the filly?

They are doing fine. Their 2 yo stud went Grand at a show a few weeks ago. She was excited because they have been getting inquiries about breeding to him. The filly born this year is a real looker, I really need to get some pictures to show you.

Alison won Reserve on Saturday and High Point on Sunday at a 2 day QH show. The competition is a little tougher than at the circuit they normally show at, but she can still hold her own.

We can't afford to drive it anywhere unless we have to have the power.

With the price of diesel, I limit my trips too, but my truck is my only vehicle.

Here is my rig.
